Job Description
The US-based International and Operational Genetic Counselor supports the delivery of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) services to international patients by providing expert genetic counseling, managing cases from initiation to completion, and collaborating with internal teams and external clients.
Responsibilities include patient counseling, case coordination, clinic support, and participation in team meetings, training, and research initiatives.
As a member of the global genetic counseling team, the International and Operational Genetic Counselor (IOGC) utilizes their practical genetics knowledge to maintain high laboratory standards of genetic testing services.
The IOGC works to support delivery of genomic services, including preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). Provides clinical support for CooperSurgical laboratory operations and both clinical and technical support for external clients.
Key participant in improvement of delivered PGT product and in departmental contributions to the broader CooperSurgical organization.
Responsibilities
- Quality assurance of PGT laboratory and genetic counseling protocols (60%)
- Utilizes practical knowledge in clinical, molecular, and population genetics to verify accuracy of data on laboratory reports
- Together with the laboratory scientists, assists with report writing for complicated or non-standard results
- Conduct clinical review of PGT-M sub-cycle orders to ensure that current clinical case acceptance criteria are met
- Contributes to departmental and product improvement initiatives under direction of management
- Focused clinical and technical support for CooperSurgical staff, clients and external genetic counselors, across all laboratories (30%)
- Management of domestic and international PGT-M and PGT-SR cases, from enrolment through test completion, including conducting genetic counseling consultations and generation of enrolment summary documents or genetic counseling consultation reports as applicable
- Counsels patients regarding PGT-M, PGT-SR, and PGT-A test procedures, risks, benefits, and limitations
- Documents patient encounters in appropriate internal systems as well as customized external client and patient-facing letters
- Handles internal processing of PGT documents returned by external consultant genetic counselors
- Assists clinics, patients, and larger CooperSurgical organization with PGT processes
- Associated Responsibilities (10%)
- Contributes to genetic counseling projects as directed by manager with short term objective (<1 yr) that improves function of genetic counseling team
- Participates in genetic counseling meetings, training events and other group initiatives, as directed by manager
- Completes own continued education; logging and submitting CEUs required by organization granting board accreditation(s)
Travel
- Occasional (<10%) need for domestic and/or international travel
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bilingual (English/Spanish), with proficiency in reading and writing in both languages
- Knowledge of and proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
- High level of interpersonal skills to interact with patients, customers, peers and management in a compassionate and professional manner
- Strong attention to detail in composing and proofing materials
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting
Work Environment
- Remote setting; must have private home office space available
- Prolonged sitting in front of a computer
Experience
- Three years of relevant genetic counseling work experience, including at least one year in a laboratory setting
Education
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling or similar field from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution, or its international equivalent
- Board registered with the ABGC, or its equivalent

The good faith estimate of the salary range for this role is $76,000 to $100,000. The actual amount offered is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to location, skills and experience.
