Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Radiation Therapy Manager and according to established policies and procedures for various age groups of patients, the Radiation Therapist delivers radiation therapy treatments to patients referred for radiation therapy.
They render patient treatments utilizing information provided by simulation, dosimetry and the physician's treatment orders. Keeps treatment records and prepares operational reports as required.
Other areas of involvement include, but are not limited to, simulations, calculations, machine operations with efficient use of treatment units and radiation safety, preparing the treatment room, positioning patients and monitoring patients during the procedure.
Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.
What You Will Do
Demonstrates current level of expertise required in scope of radiation therapy; to include performing daily warm-up and QA on Linear Accelerator/CT simulator, deliver planned course of radiation therapy as directed by the Radiation Oncologist/Dosimetrist, review prescriptions and dosimetric calculations prior to treatment, maintains and documents daily records of administered treatments.
Participate in Brachytherapy Procedures
Coordinates daily patient schedules, performs minor maintenance on equipment for simple failures and malfunctions.
Able to simulate treatment set-ups including proper documentation to include constructing immobilization devices as needed for reproducibility and perform CT procedures for treatment planning..
Must evaluate and assess treatment delivery components, evaluate and assess the daily physiological and psychological responsiveness of the patient, and ensure quality care for patients undergoing radiation therapy.
Practices safety precautions and wearing of personal protective equipment when needed.
Applies rules and regulations for radiation safety, and if such hazard should exist, reports to physicist, and supervisor.
Observe clinical progress of patient undergoing radiation treatments, and at the first sign of any complications, reports immediately to the Nurse/Radiation Oncologist.
Ensures needed supplies for patient treatments are maintained in designated areas in accord with departmental policy.
- Documents all procedures and performs patient billing in a timely manner.
- Teach applied aspects of Radiation Therapy to students as assigned.
Participates in the orientation and education of new employees, students, and other members of the organization.

- Graduate of an accredited school of Radiation Therapy.
Experience Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of Radiation Therapy.
- Board certified or board-eligible with certification obtained within 6 months required.
- Experience with advanced treatment techniques (IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT), along with respiratory gating or motion management systems
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to deliver prescribed radiation treatments accurately in accordance with physician directives
- Ability to interpret and execute treatment plans developed by radiation oncologists and dosimetrists
- Ability to operate linear accelerators and related equipment safely and efficiently
- Ability to adhere to professional standards set by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Ability to recognize emergent situations and initiate appropriate response
- Ability to position patients precisely and reproducibly for daily treatments
- Ability to maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records
- Ability to educate patients on treatment procedures and expectations
- Ability to prioritize workload and manage time in a fast-paced clinical setting
- Strong technical proficiency in operating linear accelerators and imaging systems
- Skilled in IGRT, CBCT, and other image-guided treatment verification techniques
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Adaptability in high-volume or high-acuity environments
