Job Description
The transplant psychologist serves as a consultant on the multidisciplinary team and is fully integrated within the Transplant Institute.
The ideal candidate will have experience in pre-surgical evaluation, chronic illness management and a passion for reducing health care disparities and providing equitable access to life-saving care. This clinical role also includes program development, clinical education and research opportunities.
Experience with substance use disorders, adolescent and young adult (AYA) populations with chronic illness and/or psychological assessment in medical patients is a plus but not required.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluate and diagnose mental and emotional disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings for patients undergoing evaluation for solid organ transplant, awaiting transplant, or following transplant, and conduct psychological evaluations of living liver and kidney donors.
- Interview and observe patients to assess psychological functioning and transplant readiness.
- Select, administer, score, and interpret psychological assessments.
- Develop individualized treatment plans related to transplant candidacy and post-transplant psychological health.
- Provide treatment for psychological disorders affecting transplant patients.
- Participate in Organ Program Medical Review Boards to assess patient candidacy for transplantation.
- Serve as a psychological consultant to transplant teams and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to transplant psychology program development and research initiatives.
- Participate in paid rotational on-call coverage for inpatient services only.
- Perform all duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.
Education and Training
Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an APA-accredited program at an accredited degree-granting college or university.
- Completion of a predoctoral internship or residency through an APA-accredited program.
- Completion of a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical or Health Psychology.
- Training and experience in health psychology preferred.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team in a medical setting preferred.
Familiarity with chronic illness management, biopsychosocial frameworks, and evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions.

Requirements
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program. Completion of an APA-accredited predoctoral internship and a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical or Health Psychology is required.
