The Audiologist II performs as a staff clinician, utilizing the professional skills of an audiologist to provide diagnostic and treatment services for the general population across the lifespan.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Audiologist II at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Identifies persons with hearing handicaps and determines the type and degree of hearing impairment or auditory disorder through history, interview, and selection of audiological test batteries through accepted standard practice including: pure-tone audiometry, immittance audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, and auditory brainstem response. Minimum patient contact is 20 hours per week.
Interprets diagnostic findings to the interdisciplinary team, family members, referring physician(s), other professionals, and school personnel.
Participates as a team member of an interdisciplinary team including medical, educational therapeutic, rehabilitation, and social service personnel within the Medical Center and the community (e. g. Team Staffing, IEP meetings, Program Coordination Meetings).
Completes written records as required by the Medical Center such as formal diagnostic evaluation reports, discharge summaries, IEPs, IFSPs, SOAP notes, and session notes.
- Plans and provides individual and/or group therapy for children with hearing/communication handicaps.
- Provides counseling and guidance to family members in facilitation of therapy goals at home.
Establishes patient's needs for and arranges: additional diagnostic consultation and/or therapy; transfers to another division within the Medical Center and/or outside agency; termination of therapy.
Maintains records for the purpose of data collection or research projects, statistics, and hospital billing, including third party accountability.
Provides therapeutic services for children and adults with hearing loss, including hearing aid evaluation, speech reading instruction, aural (re)habilitation assessment, and long-term programming.
- Participates in daily acoustical calibration of equipment and maintenance of ASHA standards.
- Participates in routine end-of-day cleaning of equipment and supplies in the department.
- Uses real-ear or simulated real-ear, including real-ear to coupler difference and how it applies to hearing aid fittings.
- Utilizes immittance equipment as developmentally appropriate.
Evaluates peripheral auditory function and neuroauditory function (utilizing ABR) and vestibular function (utilizing electronystagmography) in adult and pediatric cases referred by physicians.
Coordinates programs (diagnostics, therapy, and research) with educational, medical, therapeutic, rehabilitative, and social services within the hospital and throughout the community.
- Uses rating scales, including COSI and APHAB for verification of benefit from amplification.
- Provides hearing screenings for community agencies and health fairs.
- Leads parent discussions for the purpose of understanding and insight into a variety of auditory handicaps; function and use of amplification devices and behavior problem management and long range goals.
- Participates in the development of new programs.
Clinicians who specialize in assessment of CAPD must be able to describe and assess temporal processing, dichotic listening/binaural integration, monaural low-redundancy/auditory closure, binaural interaction.
Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i. e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 20 lbs. and stands a minimum of 8 hours a day.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
A graduate or postgraduate degree in the area of audiology (MA, MS, Au. D., Sc.D., or Ph.D.).
- Previous hearing aid dispensing and pediatric audiology experience.
- Possesses and demonstrates knowledge of Central Auditory Processing Disorders and the assessment of Central Auditory Function utilizing behavioral measures and electrophysiological measures.
- Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in a hospital setting.
- Maintains ASHA CCC-A.
Licenses and Certifications Required
- Audiology License.
- BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
Maintains required continuing education requirements for Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensing Licenses (currently 20 hrs. biannually for each license).
Eligible for current hearing aid dispensing license (temporary license is acceptable for first six months only).

Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location. Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered. Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate.
Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
