Founded in 1984, International SOS operates in more than 90 countries, delivering healthcare, medical assistance, emergency response, and workforce support services worldwide.

Job Description

As a Physician and Medical Officer on Wake Island, you'll combine hands-on patient care with clinical leadership in a remote Pacific island environment where access to additional medical services is limited.

You'll provide acute and emergency care, manage chronic conditions, coordinate medical evacuations, and supervise onsite medical personnel. You'll also oversee clinical quality, emergency preparedness, and daily medical operations to support safe, effective healthcare delivery.

Project Site: Project Site: Wake Island. This position requires onsite work on Wake Island. Meals, housing, and transportation are provided.

Schedule

Clinic hours with emergency response availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including the ability to respond within 30 minutes of notification.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver clinical care: Provide acute, emergency, and chronic condition management, including stabilization of life-threatening conditions until medical evacuation is possible.

Coordinate emergency response: Manage medical evacuations, including clinical coordination and associated administrative requirements, and support emergency readiness.

Lead medical operations: Supervise onsite medical personnel, including advanced EMTs or paramedics, and provide clinical oversight, staffing plans, and medical guidance.

Maintain clinical quality: Lead infection control, patient safety, medical documentation, clinical governance, and the development of medical policies and procedures.

Manage medical resources: Oversee clinic readiness, medical equipment, medication security, inventory, and coordination of medical and laboratory supplies.

Support operational accountability: Maintain regulatory compliance, prepare required medical and operational reports, and provide mortuary affairs services when required.

Qualifications

Requirements

Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited U.S. medical school or equivalent international institution.

Completed residency or equivalent hospital-based training in Family Practice, General Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine at a U.S. hospital or equivalent international hospital.

Minimum five years of post-residency medical practice experience in the United States.

Current U.S. MD or DO license and required certifications to practice medicine in the United States.

Current U.S. nationally accredited Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications, plus a DEA license.

Expertise in acute and emergency medical care in remote or austere environments, including complex medical evacuation management; proficiency in medical records compliance, telemedicine, and teleradiology.

U.S. citizenship and valid passport required. Must obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) or Tier 1 investigation equivalent if working more than 180 days in a fiscal year.

  • Availability during clinic hours and for emergency response.
  • Very high proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred

Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.

Experience in military or remote medical settings, including healthcare services supporting government programs.

Experience coordinating medical evacuations, including administrative requirements, and familiarity with mortuary affairs and remote medical logistics.
