Job Description
The Certified Speech-Language Pathologist provides advanced therapy services and education to patients, patient's family and staff to prevent and treat disability following disease, injury or other cause.
The Speech Language Pathologist evaluates, plans, provides treatment and collaborates with others to optimize functional recovery and minimize disability.
The Certified Speech-Language Pathologist may supervise non-certified Speech-Language Pathologists in accordance with the MS State Department of Health Supervised Professional Employment Plan (SPEP).
Responsibilities
- Evaluates, plans and provides care to optimize functional recovery of patient
- Collaborates with patient, family and health care team to plan care
- Provides patient care interventions based on patient acuity and functional status
- Alters the plan of care and updates goals based on patient's response to treatment
- Evaluates hearing or speech and language test results, barium swallow results, or medical or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, or swallowing disorders
- Administers hearing or speech and language evaluations, tests, or examinations to patients to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written or oral tests or special instruments
- Observes and documents patient's response to treatment and progress
- Assures accurate, concise and efficient documentation of patient progress in patient record
- Communicates patient care needs with interdisciplinary health care teams
- Facilitates patient education, discharge planning and functional maintenance with interdisciplinary staff and utilizing available resources
- Serves as a patient advocate in identifying functional potential and promoting the appropriate utilization of services
- Collaborates with speech therapy team
- Consults with and refers clients to additional medical or educational services
- Consults with and advises medical staff on speech or hearing topics, such as communication strategies or speech and language stimulation
- Designs, develops, or employs alternative diagnostic or communication devices or strategies
- Assists with supervising non-certified Speech-Language Pathologists with speech services
- Participates in planning and operational changes to achieve individual and team performance improvement goals
Qualifications
Education Requirements
Required
- Master's Degree in speech-language pathology, communicative disorders, or speech and hearing science from an accredited program
License and Certification Requirements
Required License
- Valid State of Mississippi Speech Language Pathologist license
Required Certification
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
Experience Requirements
- 1 year of direct clinical work with patients, consultations, record keeping, or any other duties relevant to a bona fide program of clinical work
Knowledge
- Advanced Speech Language Pathology principles, practices and procedures
- Evaluation and treatment of individuals with speech, language, cognitive, swallowing disorders and social or emotional needs
- Use and operation of equipment used in speech language pathology
Skills
- Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things
- Monitoring/assessing performance of individuals to make improvements or take corrective action
- Thinking critically by using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
Abilities
- Ability to prioritize tasks
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
- Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively through oral and written expression
Work Environment: Work is generally performed in a healthcare environment.
Exposure to chemicals which may be used in patient care. Position may be required to travel to various locations.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift, push, pull, and position patients or equipment. Frequent reaching, sitting, walking, and standing may be required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job.
