Job Summary
We are seeking a 40-hour, day shift Physician Assistant to support our Inpatient Orthopedics team. We are located on the NWH Main Campus at 2014 Washington Street, Newton, 02462.
In this role, Physician Assistants provide coverage in the Emergency Department, on the inpatient floor, perform inpatient surgical consults, and potentially evening OR coverage. Providers practice autonomously at the top of their licensure and are responsible for:
- Presenting and discussing patient evaluations with Attending Surgeons to develop appropriate treatment plans
- Ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting results
- Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including but not limited to:
- Wound care
- Tube and drain insertion, care, and removal
- Suturing and suture removal
- Splint, brace, and cast application and removal
- Medication administration (including IV push medications and steroid/anesthetic injections)
- Central venous line removal
- Electrocardiograms
- Conducting daily patient rounds
- Participating in discharge planning and completing discharge summaries.
- Educating and counseling patients and families
- Orienting medical students, physician assistant students, and surgical residents to the clinical environment, patient care practices, and hospital policies
- Participating in quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives
In this full-time role, you will have the opportunity to practice at the top of your licensure, with mentorship and support from a tenured, highly skilled group of advanced practice providers.
Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners.

Essential Functions
- Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
- Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
- Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
