Job Description
The Laboratory Genetic Counselor supports Select Health contract work and the Genetic Laboratory Stewardship Program. While some patient consultation is occasionally involved, the Laboratory Genetic Counselor primarily functions both independently and as a team member in supporting development, implementation, and quality review of clinical genetic testing.

Scope
This position provides direct laboratory genetic counseling for ordering providers and patients as required. The position can be fully remote, hybrid, or in-person.
Job Essentials
Support SelectHealth initiatives by reviewing genetic testing pre-authorization requests, appeals, and medical coverage policies.
Educates ordering providers on genetic testing options, insurance and billing matters, test results, and medical management.
Provides occasional patient education and counseling regarding genetic test options or results.
Conducts utilization review/lab stewardship to determine proper test ordering by provider and manage high priority or complex cases.
Participates in individual and team directed research projects with opportunities to present findings at professional meetings. Prepares manuscripts for submission to professional journals.
- Communicates clearly and directly in verbal and written form to providers and patients.
- Participates in peer review by providing and receiving objective and constructive feedback with peers.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling. Education must be obtained from an accredited program. Degree will be verified.
Eligibility for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) at time of hire with completion of certification required within one year of hire.
- Licensed as a Genetic Counselor in the state of practice (Utah).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in reading, interpreting, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
- Experience using PowerPoint, word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, e-mail, and scheduling.
- Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC).
- Three years of experience as a clinical or laboratory Genetic Counselor.
Experience in project management, grant application submission, publication of abstracts for academic meetings, and journal article publication.
Demonstrated knowledge of genetic diagnostic technology, human mutation databases, genome browsers, and HGVS nomenclature.
Physical Qualifications
Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
See and read computer monitors and documents.
Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
