Franklin Biolabs, Inc. is in search of a Clinical Veterinarian who will provide comprehensive veterinary care and clinical oversight for laboratory animals used in preclinical research, including nonhuman primates and rodents. This position is responsible for clinical case management, animal health and welfare, veterinary support of research studies, and compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Clinical Veterinarian works collaboratively with research scientists, study directors, veterinary technicians, animal behaviorists, and animal care personnel to support the safe and effective execution of studies under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and non-GLP standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Veterinary Care
- Conducts daily rounds and manages the health and clinical case load of animals in the vivarium.
- Develops and implements individualized treatment and herd health treatment plans, including preventive care, disease management, and appropriate follow-up monitoring
- Performs quarantine, routine and protocol driven physical exams and diagnostic tests as directed.
- Provides clinical and emergency veterinary care, examination, treatment, surgery and follow-up for colony animals.
- Performs humane euthanasia in accordance with approved protocols, institutional policies, and regulatory guidelines; including assessment of humane endpoints, confirmation methods, and appropriate documentation
- Performs basic diagnostics and interprets serology, microbiology, and clinical pathology results (i. e., hematology, clinical chemistry, radiographs, electrocardiograms)
- Collaborate with the Behaviorist to assess behavioral health and ensure ongoing animal welfare and psychological well-being
- Reviews the animal health records for pending shipments to assess health status, verify compliance with institutional health requirements, and determine suitability for receipt
- Maintains accurate medical and veterinary records in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations for FDA review
- Signs health certificates and shipping documents as directed
- Provides oversight to the veterinary pharmaceutical inventory including procurement, storage, dispensing, usage, and recordkeeping of prescription and controlled substances, ensuring compliance with DEA regulations and institutional policies.
- Participates in after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency veterinary coverage as assigned.
Research Support
- Provides clinical support and veterinary consultation during protocol development, study planning, and execution of GLP and non-GLP studies.
- Assists with specialized procedures, including surgical interventions, dosing procedures, imaging, and biological sample collection in multiple laboratory animal species.
- Provides veterinary oversight of anesthesia and perioperative care during research procedures.
- Supports the implementation of clinical monitoring plans, including the safety assessment of test articles.
Regulatory Compliance and Training
- Ensures animal activities follow institutional, USDA, OLAW, GLP and AAALAC regulations/guidelines
- Participates in regulatory inspections, including IACUC semi-annual inspections.
- Participates in IACUC protocol review, veterinary consultation, and post approval monitoring programs
- Provide clinical instruction and hands-on training to veterinary technicians, research personnel, and animal care staff
Education and Experience
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary institution.
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in Pennsylvania
- 1- 3 years relevant clinical veterinary experience, preferably in laboratory animal medicine, biomedical research, or a preclinical CRO
- Demonstrated proficiency in clinical assessment, anesthesia, analgesia, emergency care and surgical support
- Strong clinical judgement, communication skills, and ability to collaborated with multidisciplinary research teams
- Experience working with NHP’s in a lab environment strongly preferred.
Certifications or Licenses
- Must have a veterinary license in at least one state.
- Ability to obtain a veterinary license and USDA accreditation within six months of employment is required.
- Board certification or eligible by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or equivalent international certification is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance and agencies (USDA, OLAW, FDA, AAALAC).
- Knowledge of animal care and use and regulatory expectations.
- Experience with a wide variety of common laboratory animal species
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and negotiate through conflicting situations.
- Self-directed individual with the ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with limited direction, competing priorities under tight deadlines.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to interact with team members, clients, vendors and other third parties.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across various disciplines to ensure alignment.
- Ability to use digital communication tools (video conferencing, chat platforms etc.) to effectively collaborate with team members in hybrid and remote settings.
- Detailed knowledge of animal welfare regulations and best practices
Travel
- Ability to travel domestically and/or internationally no more than 10% of the time, depending on the needs of the project, the client and the company.
- Ability to accommodate evening, overnight or weekend travel, including potential extended trips to attend training, meetings, conduct fieldwork, or meet with clients.
On-Site
- This position requires full-time on-site presence at our Discovery Labs location.
Immunizations and Screenings
- This position will require working with multiple species of animals (e. g. Non-Human Primates, Small ruminants, Swine, Rabbits, Rats, Mice).
- This position will require access to lab animal spaces.
- This position will require proof of measles titer and annual TB screening
Essential Status
- Essential for Closure: This position may be required to go on-site during company closures to sustain the life and care of animals/biological materials. Examples of company closures include snow days, special shutdowns, etc.

- Ability to distinguish between different colors (normal color vision).
- Ability to see clearly at various distances.
- Adequate near vision for reading documents or lab equipment.
- Ability to focus and maintain concentration in tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work in environments with varying light conditions.
