Job Description

The Occupational Therapist III is a clinical specialist who will perform evaluations and subsequent planning, execution, and supervision of therapy programs for persons with sensory motor or neuromotor dysfunction.

The incumbent will participate in intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary training programs for affiliating students, staff, and community agencies; provide clinical supervision of occupational therapy students, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), and volunteers/aides; and maintain appropriate patient records.

This position demonstrates advanced proficiency in a clinical specialty area, and may develop models for service delivery and evaluation, develop training materials, educate others, and conduct research activities.

The incumbent may also review and interpret literature and disseminate those findings through formal and informal presentations, all with regard to their own area of documented specialization.

Responsibilities

Evaluate assigned patients of increased complexity using acquired information about the patient’s functional skills, roles, and context. Prioritize needs and analyze information obtained from the occupational profile to begin the treatment planning process.

Develop treatment plans consistent with best practices, well-grounded in evidence, and utilizing sound clinical reasoning.

Execute client-centered, developmentally appropriate, meaningful, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and effective treatment plans that progress client towards long term goals.

Collaborate with families to identify occupational therapy needs and prioritize treatment goals and plans, with provision of written guidance to caregivers as appropriate.

Recognize and consistently respond in a therapeutic manner to environmental stressors, challenging client behaviors, and multiple demands of working in a pediatric setting.

Provide consultation to peers in area of specialty.

Maintain documentation that is thorough; objective; pertinent; organized; free from grammatical and spelling errors; concise; clinically accurate; readable for multiple audiences; and in adherence to departmental, Kennedy Krieger Institute, American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), and Maryland state Occupational Therapy guidelines.

Participate in inter/intra- disciplinary and relationships, demonstrating initiative, effective listening, good judgment to manage time and caseload, and communication with peers and supervisors that is professional and respectful.

Develop and implement models for the delivery and evaluation of services; develop training materials for families, peers and others; or plan and conduct research activities within specialty area as determined with departmental leadership.

Research, review, and interpret literature related to certification and/or specialty area. Disseminate knowledge to internal and external audiences through formal and informal presentations and trainings.

Actively take a role in ensuring that the schedule template is up to date, the schedule is full, and make-up sessions are offered as needed. Proactively and respectfully work with Care Center and supervisor to anticipate scheduling needs and changes while meeting productivity standards.

Perform setup and clean-up of treatment supplies and treatment space, adhering to all policies and procedures related to safety and infection control guidelines.

Utilize good fiscal judgement with expendable supplies and order requests.

Provide guidance and mentorship to junior occupational therapy staff, with an emphasis on training others in area of clinical specialty.

May supervise affiliating trainees, COTAs, Rehab Technicians, students, trainees, and/or volunteers as assigned. Foster professional development of supervisee(s) appropriately.

Qualifications

Must be available to work outside of normally scheduled working hours, as needed.

Must be physically present at the assigned job site. Hybrid or remote work may be available at the discretion of department leadership.

May be exposed to potentially hazardous materials and situations (e. g., communicable diseases, blood pathogens, radioactive materials and aggressive/combative individuals).

Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain licensure to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Maryland.
  • Must possess and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of occupational therapy required.
  • Master’s degree highly preferred.

Experience

Minimum four years of licensed experience as an occupational therapist required, with a minimum three years of specialty in rehabilitation and/or pediatric occupational therapy.
