Job Description

The Oncology Nurse Navigator is a professional Registered Nurse with strong oncology-specific clinical knowledge who provides individualized guidance, education, and support while helping patients overcome barriers within the healthcare system. This role serves as a vital connection between patients, caregivers, physicians, and multidisciplinary care teams—helping ensure patients receive coordinated, timely, and high-quality care.

What You'll Do

Using the nursing process and oncology clinical expertise, the Oncology Nurse Navigator will:

Guide patients and caregivers through the oncology care continuum, particularly during diagnosis and initial treatment planning.

Provide individualized education and support to promote informed decision-making and understanding of treatment plans.

Identify barriers to care and collaborate with the appropriate resources to help patients successfully navigate the healthcare system.

Facilitate timely access to consultations, diagnostic testing, treatment, and supportive services.

Serve as a key communication link between patients and multidisciplinary providers both within MUSC Health and with external healthcare partners.

Coordinate communication among physicians, nursing, ancillary services, and other members of the oncology care team.

  • Advocate for patient needs while promoting continuity and coordination of care.
  • Recognize changing patient needs and appropriately prioritize or reprioritize care and resources.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external providers and community resources.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced oncology environment.
  • Additional Job Description

Education & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of three years of related clinical nursing experience.

A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) may be accepted in lieu of the BSN requirement.

Preferred

Previous oncology nursing experience.

Licensure & Certifications

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse through the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required.

Knowledge & Skills

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate

  • Strong knowledge of complex medical terminology and advanced disease processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical-thinking and clinical decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to rapidly prioritize and reprioritize competing patient care needs.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to appropriately delegate responsibilities to qualified personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships internally and externally.
  • Ability to work autonomously while remaining an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.

Cancer care can be complex and overwhelming. As an Oncology Nurse Navigator, you will help ensure patients do not have to navigate that journey alone. You will connect the pieces of their care, improve communication among providers, address barriers, and help patients and families understand what comes next.

If you are an experienced RN who is passionate about oncology, patient advocacy, education, and coordinated care, we invite you to join the MUSC Health Hematology & Oncology Cancer Center team.

If you like working with energetic enthusiastic individuals, you will enjoy your career with us!
