The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) performs a wide variety of job duties during their shifts, caring for and educating patients about their medical and psychiatric conditions; establishing trust and building rapport with patients and their families are key elements of this position, and assists the Director of Nursing in the day-to-day management of the Nursing Department.
The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the Nursing Staff on their assigned unit. The Assistant Director of Nursing may be required to function in the role of the Director of Nursing in the absence of or by directive from the Director of Nursing.
Core Job Duties
1. Resolve pending issues from the previous shift, e. g., missed or incomplete labs or treatments, incomplete admissions or discharges, missing data for continuity of care.
2. Compliance Audit Related to Infection Control, e. g., glucometer, refrigerator, sharps containers, laboratory cleanliness, pests in facility, hand washing and influenza vaccination program.
3. Medication storage, medication returns, medication destruction, calling pharmacy to resolve medication issues to comply with state and federal regulations.
4. Order supplies, inventory management, maintain/organize medical supplies.
5. Monitor and track lab orders, monitor and track outside consultations, track medical transfers. Verification that collected lab samples are properly labeled and stored.
6. Level of Care transfers in Avatar are entered timely
7. Administrative functions, e. g., scanning documents into Avatar, assisting with the work schedule, assisting BHT’s with the creation/modification of observation sheets.
8. Admission and discharge audits. Check/audit the proper completion of any nursing procedure (at discretion of DON) to assure compliance.
9. Coordinate the Vivitrol program as directed by supervisor.
10. Is responsible for maintaining the daily scheduling of units according to approved ratios based on census.
11. Assists the staff with admissions, discharges, patient care needs as required to provide optional nursing care.
12. Interacts with patients and staff on duty on a regular basis to ensure quality care.
13. Collaborates with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for quality patient care delivery.
14. During State of Emergency, ensures appropriate nurse staffing levels are maintained and may be required to remain onsite throughout the State of Emergency period.

16. Demonstrates the ability to comply with all regulatory and accreditation guidelines and standards.
17. Ability to maintain the confidential nature of all payments and facility activities.
18. Maintains required training and continuing education.
19. Maintain the Standards of Ethical Conduct.
20. Reports any concerns to immediate supervisor.
21. Demonstrates ability to perform additional duties, as deemed necessary by supervisor.
22. Assists in managing outpatient needs for discharged clients including injections as needed.
23. May function in the role of Director of Nursing in the absence or by direction of the Director of Nursing.
24. May take RN call for the facility at the discretion of the Director of Nursing/Designee.
Education
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent (higher education preferred)
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse as indicated in state law.
Experience
Minimum (2) years' experience as a licensed registered nurse
Behavioral Health Experience Preferred
