Job Description
Operates specialized equipment such as linear accelerators, KV machines, HDR units to deliver precise doses of radiation to tumor sizes. Techniques include: KV, Electron Beam, 3D, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT, DIBH, HDR.
Assists Radiation Oncologists/Physician with treatment planning sessions. Observes radiation safety measures for patients and personnel. Collaborates with the Oncology team for treatment planning simulation procedures including precise patient positioning and immobilization. Determine CT scanning protocol to be used.
Administer IV contrast per protocol including monitoring patient for adverse reactions. Support physician with fiducial marker placement. Obtain high quality CT scans to be used for treatment planning including documenting set up and billing for procedures
Records all treatment information in patient’s chart. Report any erratic behavior of treatment machines to a Supervisor or Physicist. Performs morning warm-up procedure and calibration checks.
Schedules patients on treatment machine using computerized scheduling system Coordinates treatment times on machine with Medical Oncology scheduled treatments/appointments. Maintain continuous contact with patients, frequent contact with Nurses, Physicians, Dosimetrists and Physicists.
Observes patient for reactions and reports to Nurses/Physicians. Reinforces Physician’s Advice to patient regarding reactions to treatment and their care.
Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of patents during examinations and procedures to ensure safety and comfort while preparing for and while undergoing radiographic procedures.
Maintains daily billing information for patients treated. Organizes patient’s appointment, portal films and treatment information.
Perform quality assurance checks on treatment plans prior to start of treatment. Review treatment consent prescriptions. Verify treatment parameters. Perform daily imaging with Exac Trac Dynamic to verify patients position to ensure accuracy prior to treatment, Perform time outs prior to treatment.
Machine Warm ups/QA Checks
Advises and assists Radiation Therapy students and staff as needed.
Prepares for and assists with radioactive seed-implants and high dose rate brachytherapy procedures as designated by management.
Assists with quality improvement. Participates in quality improvement teams.
Irradiate Blood for Clinical Use at CCH
Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment-Radiation therapists work in a controlled radiation environment following strict safety protocols. The work involves standing for extended periods, lifting and positioning patients. Must be detail oriented display compassion and interpersonal skills for patient interaction. Must be able to problem solve, work independently as well along side team members and display good technical proficiencies and communication skills
Graduate of an Accredited Radiation Therapy Program
- Registered by the ARRT and licensed by the State of Massachusetts. Certification must be maintained through continuing education per ARRT and Massachusetts Radiation Control Program Standards
- Minimum two years’ experience with Aria or similar system.
- BLS required within 3 months of position start date and must maintain.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to work under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to triage work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the department team in performing professional service to patients.
