Job Description

The Behavioral Health Transport Technician provides urgent, non-medical transportation services for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

This role is designed to offer a compassionate, safe, secure, and non-traumatic alternative to traditional law enforcement or ambulance transport, ensuring that individuals receive trauma-informed care while being moved between healthcare locations.

The Behavioral Health Transport Technician will uphold and promote Apex Paramedics core values of Honesty, Accountability and Service.

Key Responsbilities

  • Safe Crisis Transport: Execute the urgent transport of individuals in crisis, ensuring the environment remains tranquil and non-coercive to reduce patient anxiety and combativeness.
  • Risk Assessment and Monitoring: Continually assess the patient’s mental state and propensity for elopement. Behavioral Health Transport Technician must remain vigilant for signs of claustrophobia, agitation, or altered mental status that could lead to combative behavior.
  • De-escalation and Intervention: Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage restless or agitated patients during transit in a way that utilizes compassion and reduces further trauma. In emergency situations, can keep the patient safe while awaiting additional resources.
  • Facility Coordination: Proactively communicate with sending and receiving facilities to obtain accurate patient assessments, including voluntary or involuntary commitment status, history of violence, and mental competence.
  • Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Operate and maintain specialized vehicles. Ensure all safety equipment, such as barriers and cameras, are functional. Ensure vehicle is clean and decontaminated for each transport.
  • Compliance and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of every trip.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid CPR/BLS certification
  • Valid drivers’ license
  • Albe to pass background checks (including MVR in accordance with policy

Preferred Qualifications/Training

  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Crisis De-escalation and Intervention
  • Specialized behavioral health curriculum such as ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality) or Stress First Aid" (SFA).

Work Environment & Schedule

  • 12-hour shifts; day, night, holiday, and weekend ability required.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, adverse weather, and physically demanding conditions.
  • Compliance with all PPE and infections control protocols is mandatory.

$20.25 - $24.16 an hour
