Emergency Department Physician Assistant (PA-C) - PRN

Simpson General Hospital is seeking a skilled and experienced Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join our Emergency Department team on a PRN basis. The ideal candidate will have a strong emergency medicine background, excellent clinical judgment, and the ability to provide high-quality patient care in a fast-paced rural emergency setting.

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Physician Assistant provides medical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Working collaboratively with the Emergency Department physicians and healthcare team, the PA performs assessments, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, develops treatment plans, performs procedures within their scope of practice, and provides patient and family education.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Current Mississippi Physician Assistant license or eligibility for licensure
  • Current NCCPA certification (PA-C)
  • Current DEA registration or ability to obtain prior to employment
  • Telemed Certification required
  • Minimum two (2) years of Emergency Department experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
  • ATLS certification preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, assess, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Obtain medical histories and perform comprehensive physical examinations.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory studies, radiology exams, ECGs, and other diagnostic tests.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical findings.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments within state regulations and approved protocols.
  • Perform emergency procedures within scope of practice, including wound repair, splinting, incision and drainage, and other approved procedures.
  • Exercise professional judgment regarding consultation and collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, ancillary departments, patients, and families.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities.
  • Maintain all required licensure, certifications, competencies, and credentialing requirements.
  • Follow all hospital policies, infection prevention guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment as directed.
  • Subject to irregular hours and emergency call coverage.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases

  • Exposure to stressful, unpredictable, and high-acuity situations

Frequent Interruptions and Competing Priorities

Flexible work schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and on-call coverage as needed

Physical Requirements

The Physician Assistant must be able to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, stoop, twist, kneel, and squat as needed during patient care activities; lift and move equipment and assist with patient care tasks; communicate effectively with patients and staff; and see and hear clearly with or without corrective devices.

Requirements
