Position Overview

To assist or support all player rehabilitation activities that take place at the Florida Complex in North Port, FL. The care and management of the athletes will be a collaboration amongst the following support staff: medical, strength & conditioning, nutrition, mental health and the coaching staff.

Location

This position will require relocation to our player development complex located in North Port, Florida and be available to rehab players year round.

Primary Responsibilities & Skills

Evaluation, Assessment and Monitoring

To help with the management and the needs of the injured minor league athletes that are completing theirrehabilitation at the Florida complex, along with any 40-man players completing rehabilitation at the facility

Demonstrate proficiency in the skills necessary to complete a thorough evaluation, along with the necessary skills to adjust rehabilitation plans throughout the time the athlete is completing their progression

Thoroughly and objectively monitor progress throughout rehabilitation progressions based on the individual needs of the athlete. Consider the following:

  • Strength, ROM, gait/running analysis, video analysis, along with other relevant information on the athlete that was previously collected before they became injured (previous testing information collected before the athlete was injured may include joint ROM, FMS, Y-Balance, Kinetisense, forceplate metrics, grip strength, etc.)

Rehabilitation Programming and Return to Competition Planning:

Be able to competently program and plan the rehabilitation process for the athletes that are under your care. Itwill be a collaborative process with Athletic Trainers and Strength & Conditioning Coaches. Common injuries that will be managed include post-surgical conditions (elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, etc.), muscle/tendonstrains, ligament sprains, fractures, contusions and concussions.

Skills and competency must be demonstrated in the following components:

Exercise/Movement Progressions – Utilize management strategies that address the athlete betweenthe continuum of an acute injury to their full participation in games. Be able to address both site specific and global components to the injury when prescribing exercise and movement progressions.

Manual Therapy - Implement various hands on skills and techniques to help assist with the rehabilitation process - soft tissue techniques, dry needling, joint mobilization/manipulation, IASTM

Running Progressions (Linear & Change of Direction Ability) – Collaborate on the return to runningand dynamic movement patterns that the athlete needs to perform during their progression

Work Capacity/Energy Systems Development – Plan and adjust rehabilitation programming based onthe energy system demands being trained or utilized

Baseball Skill Integration – Integrate with the coaching staff regarding all baseball specific activities –throwing, hitting, defensive skills and base running

Modalities and Recovery Strategies – Apply various modalities and recovery options that help tomanage both local tissue recovery and global recovery

Administration

Maintain an active Florida Physical Therapy license and all the requirements pertaining to it by law

Stay Current with Your CPR/AED Certification

  • Keep up to date treatment notes and player medical files in the Athlete Health Management System (AHMS)
  • Assist with both Minor League and Major League physicals as needed, as well as any pre-season testing measurements (ie. ROM, Y-balance, FMS, Kinetisense, etc.) that need to be collected
  • Assist with free agent or trade medical reviews as directed by your supervisors
  • Keep all areas used clean and neat. This includes the training room, hydrotherapy room, recovery room, weightroom and your office space
  • Other duties as assigned

Continuing Education

Read current scientific literature in the fields of sports medicine, sports performance, recovery, nutrition, manual therapy, health and any other field relevant to help our athletes

Attend seminars, symposiums and conferences to further your education in topics relevant to the management of injured baseball players

Communication

Minor League Rehabilitation Players – Update the Medical Coordinator, Assistant Medical Coordinator, Minor League Physical Therapist, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coordinator about all of the players that are currently under your care for rehabilitation, along with any physician that is involved in the plan of care

Major League / 40-man Rehabilitation Players – Update the Major League Medical Staff, Major League Strength & Conditioning Staff, Medical Coordinator, Assistant Medical Coordinator, Minor League Physical Therapist, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coordinator about all of the players that are currently under your care for rehabilitation, along with any physician that is involved in the plan of care

Additional Staff – Communicate with the affiliate Athletic Trainers and Strength & Conditioning Coaches when a player from the rehabilitation group travels to the affiliate to complete baseball activities, complete a rehab assignment or becomes activated from the Injured List. Also, communicate to the coaching staff (coordinators and affiliate coaches) regarding any player rehabilitation plans that are relevant to them
