Job Description

Position Summary

  • Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital
  • Schedule: 3-12 Hour Shifts, Every 3rd Weekend

Assesses, treats, and cares for patients with breathing disorders. Initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures; maintains patient records; and selects, assembles, checks, and operates equipment.

Serving the Homewood community, Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital is a 595-bed acute-care hospital located in Birmingham, Alabama. The facility offers a full complement of services, including emergency care, cardiovascular care, bariatrics, orthopedics and rehabilitation, and surgical services.

It also is one of the largest providers of psychiatric care in the state.

The hospital has earned Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, and its bariatric program has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

The Women’s Medical Center provides comprehensive women’s services through all stages of life, including gynecologic surgery, maternity care, and labor and delivery services. Additionally, the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) holds Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care from The Joint Commission.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates competency in respiratory therapeutics and in the use of non-invasive ventilatory, pulmonary diagnostic, and other equipment required for the provision of respiratory care.
  • Maintains accurate and precise documentation
  • Demonstrates a strong power of analytical reasoning and effectively blends patient care management skills with technical expertise.
  • Communicates openly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in quality control and maintenance of arterial blood gas analyzers, specimen collection, and analysis of blood for gas transport and acid/base determinations.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures

Other Related Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient’s age and medical condition.
  • Demonstrates expertise in medical gas administration, environmental control systems, humidification, medical delivery, non-invasive ventilatory support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Instructs clinical practicum students.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for the age of the patients served on theirassigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides the care needed as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Training

  • Associate degree from an approved Respiratory Care program. (If licensed prior to December 31, 2008, a certificate of completion from an approved Respiratory Care program will be accepted.
  • Must be eligible for the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) exam per NBRC guidelines.
  • Basic computer/ mechanical training required

Licensure/Certification

  • Maintains license as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
  • Licensed by the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Therapy
  • CRT’s registered on or after July 1, 2002, must maintain an active status with the NBRC and be updated every five years. CRT’s credentialed prior to July 1, 2002, are not required to renew every five years in accordance with NBRC.
  • Maintain current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Advanced Life Support as appropriate per unit and site.
  • Preferred: Maintains active membership in the AARC.
  • Must be eligible for the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) exam per NBRC guidelines.
