Sanctuary Counselor
Position Summary
Sanctuary is a counseling psychoeducation program of Clergy Care (a division of META Care) serving diocesan priests.
The Sanctuary Counselor is a licensed mental health professional who provides one-on-one psychoeducation, helping priests understand what they're experiencing, and learn meaningful tools, aiding in the reduction of stigma.
The Sanctuary Counselor also supports priests through advocacy and comprehensive care coordination, connecting them to outside treatment and providers when that's the right next step.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one psychoeducation to priests via telehealth, across topics like burnout, stress, sleep, substance use, relationships, loneliness, stigma, and life transitions, and other identified topics.
- Guide each priest in choosing the right educational themes within the program and walk with him through it.
- Track outcomes with brief pre/post assessments to help improve the program.
Recognize when a priest needs more than education and coordinate a referral to outside providers, with his consent.
Maintain confidentiality and Sanctuary's documentation standards and follow crisis protocols when safety concerns arise.
Qualifications
Required
- Master's degree in a mental health field, with an active (or associate/license-eligible) clinical license.
- Comfort providing structured psychoeducation rather than psychotherapy.
- Willingness to complete Sanctuary's required training.
Preferred
- Familiarity with Catholic Church life and clergy culture.
- Experience with faith-based or clergy populations.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

- Warm, non-judgmental communication and strong rapport-building.
- Sound judgment about when education ends and referral to treatment begins.
- Discretion, and comfort working independently in a small, mostly remote team.

- Setting: Primarily telehealth, serving priests across the dioceses Sanctuary supports
- Schedule: Part-time, Per diem/As needed
- Reports to: VP of Clergy Counseling Programs and Services
- Compensation & Benefits: based on experience and education
