Job Description

Inova Fairfax Hospital is looking for a dedicated Lead Proton Radiation
Therapist to join the Team. This full-time role will be day-shift working Monday
– Friday located in Fairfax, VA.

The Lead Radiation Therapist performs simulation procedures for initial patient
set-ups and demonstrates essential skills of treatment modalities and protocols
to accurately set-up and administer radiation treatments. Responsible for the
operational functions of Radiation Therapy including simulations and treatments,
proper functioning of linear accelerators, simulators, and Computed Tomography
machines. Communicates effectively with patients, families, medical staff,
healthcare team members, supervisors and outside contacts.

Lead Radiation Therapist Responsibilities

* Oversees and assists team members in assigned functional area, which may
include but not limited to, ensuring team is meeting key-deliverables and
quality standards, addressing and resolving challenges, managing and tracking
performance, and assisting in time management and scheduling; escalates
issues to senior leaders as needed.
* Demonstrates essential skills of treatment modalities and protocols to
accurately set-up and administer radiation treatments on a daily basis.
* Prepares immobilization devices in accordance with physician prescriptions;
Films specified treatment volume for review and approval by physician.
* Marks/tattoos appropriate body anatomy for daily re-positioning on linear
accelerator; Documents or captures patients' measurements and machine
treatment parameters for dosimetry planning and calculations.
* Acquires Computed Tomography (CT) machine data sets for patient positioning,
contours and set-up parameters.
* Verifies beam parameters, ancillary aids and blocking via record and
verification systems on machine and patients' computerized treatment plans
before initiation of radiation beam.
* Maintains accurate records of daily treatments and other records as required;
Documents any corrections in charts resulting from changes in the originally
prescribed course of treatment; Detects unsatisfactory set-up and/or errors
and resolves/reports to physician.
* Ensures that portal verification films are taken at appropriate intervals;
Recognizes the need for adjustments in treatment ports when comparing
simulation/portal films and/or patient positions.
* Verifies operation of emergency shut offs and interlocks while reporting any
discrepancies.
* Participates or provides assistance with in-vivo dosimetry measurements and
special dosimetry.
* Ensures all departmental services are delivered in accordance with
established policies and procedures; Ensures equipment and supplies are
maintained to provide all department services.
* Evaluates routine/new products with outside vendors and makes purchasing
recommendations to department director.
* Provides education and support of methods appropriate to patients' levels of
understanding and motivation. Includes families/caregivers in education and
training as appropriate.
* Communicates with families, physicians or other healthcare team members in
anticipation of special needs of patients or families in a timely manner to
facilitate effective patient treatment.
* May perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

* Education: Associate's Degree and Graduate of an AMA/JCERT approved school of
Radiation Therapy; Associates Degree or an additional four years of relevant
experience in lieu of a degree.

* Experience: 3 years of Radiation Therapy experience

* Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association
(AHA); American Registered Radiologic Technologists certified in Radiation
Therapy

Preferred Qualifications

* Previous proton therapy experience preferred.
