Job Description

Physician

About the Role

Are you a physician looking for a primary care role where your work directly improves health equity in a community that needs you? Thundermist Health Center is looking for Physicians to join our team across Rhode Island.

You’ll manage your own patient panel, deliver comprehensive primary care, and practice as an autonomous, licensed provider within a team-based, integrated care model. Inpatient hospital care is available but optional — based on your interest, credentialing, and partner hospital availability.

Thundermist is a multi-site FQHC serving over 65,000 patients, and we deliver care regardless of insurance status, immigration status, or ability to pay.

What You’ll Do

Clinical Care

Provide complete management of primary medical care for an assigned patient panel, including scheduled visits, acute care, chronic disease management, and preventive care

Review, document, and manage medical records; order, interpret, and follow up on labs, imaging, and diagnostic testing

  • Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, within scope of practice
  • Coordinate referred services including specialty care, pharmacy, laboratory, and ancillary services
  • Provide after-hours call and coverage for Thundermist and community-based patients as scheduled
  • Provide inpatient hospital services and attending responsibilities as assigned (optional, based on interest and credentialing)
  • Precept physician residents, nurse practitioners, or medical students as assigned

Administrative

  • Participate in departmental, team, and full staff meetings to review and develop policies, procedures, health care plans, clinical goals, and objectives
  • Maintain compliance with credentialing, re-credentialing, and privileging requirements
  • Complete clinical documentation in the EHR accurately and within established timeframes

What We’re Looking For

You’re a physician who chose primary care because you want to know your patients, manage their care over time, and practice in a setting where your work has a direct impact on the health of an underserved community.

M.D. or D.O. with completed residency (minimum 3 years) in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, or Pediatrics

  • Board Certification in specialty within two years of start
  • Full, unrestricted Rhode Island medical license
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills with proficiency in medical terminology

A genuine commitment to patient-centered, high-quality care for diverse and underserved populations, with an authentic passion for health equity and community health

Preferred

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English or Portuguese/English)
  • Prior experience in an FQHC, community health center, or safety-net primary care setting
  • Eligibility for NHSC or Rhode Island state loan repayment programs

Compensation & Provider Support

Competitive compensation and benefits including: malpractice coverage through the Federal Tort Claims Act; health, dental, and vision insurance; retirement plan with employer match; generous PTO and CME allowance; eligibility for state and federal loan repayment programs. Thundermist is committed to provider wellness and is an AMA Joy in Medicine practice site — you’ll be supported by AI scribes, pharmacy technician refill assistance, prior authorization and referral support, cross-coverage support for PTO, and a nurse triage service as the first line for after-hours calls.

Schedule

Full-time (40+ hours/week), benefit-eligible. A minimum of 32 clinical hours on-site per week plus after-hours call and coverage as scheduled. Inpatient hospital hours are optional. Schedule includes some evenings and weekends, and periods of 24-hour call and coverage. Part-time arrangements may be considered.
