Speech Therapist

PRN Days

The Speech Therapist evaluates, plans, and implements specific treatment
programs for individual patients according to the principles and practices of
speech language pathology. Functions as an interdisciplinary team member
providing patient assessment/re-assessment, direct patient care, and
individualized care planning/implementation. Works with neonatal geriatric
patients with clinical competency, as applicable. Completes established
competencies for the position within designated introductory period. 
Responsible for the administration, interpretation and evaluation of tests and
measurements.  Plans and modifies treatment programs.  Other related duties as
assigned.

Responsibilities

General Functions

* Responds to physician orders for speech therapy. 
* Administers and interprets tests and measurements of patients. 
* Reviews patient charts and progress prior to treatment and modifies treatment
plan accordingly. 
* Develops functional goals based on patient and/or family expectations.
Develops, improves, and 
* restores cognitive skills, language comprehension, and language expression
skills through 
* comprehensive assessment and testing. Seeks clarification of physician orders
as needed. 
* Interprets physician orders and requests interpretation as necessary 
* Administers and interprets tests and measurements of patients 
* Reviews patient chart and progress prior to treatment and modifies the
treatment plan accordingly 
* Develops realistic functional goals based on patient and/or family
expectations 
* Instructs and involves patient, family, social worker, nursing staff and
discharge planner in patient’s progress and discharge plans, participating in
appropriate meetings. 
* Maintains documentation on all treatments 
* Possesses working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures 
* Uses appropriate modalities and procedures correctly demonstrating knowledge
of indications and contraindications 
* Assures appropriate equipment performance prior to each use 
* Organizes schedule to reflect patient priorities, needs of other staff, and
the department needs and responsibilities
* Provides in-service to staff 
* Provides clinical education for SLP students 
* Informs supervisor of incidents, accidents, equipment failure or unusual
physician or patient 
* problems immediately, initiating appropriate action. 
* Maintains a working knowledge of routine clerical procedures 
* Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
* Maintains safe environment 
* Addresses patient population –specific needs 
* Participates in Performance Improvement activities

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology/Communication
Sciences and Disorders 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Completion of Clinical Fellowship. 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Competency in performing Modified Barium Swallow Exams.
Competency in Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). Spanish
Proficiency 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: NEW GRADUATES: Possession of Intern License
from the state of Texas prior to orientation. ALL OTHERS: Possession of Texas
State License and Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from American
Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) 

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: See Preferred Certification Listing 

REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e. g., CPR):  Must have active American Heart
Association (AHA) Basic Life Support on hire
