Job Description Summary

Pay Range: $92.96 - $108.45 - $127.12

The Vascular Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) is an advanced practice provider who delivers comprehensive perioperative care to patients with vascular disease. Working in close collaboration with vascular surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team, the PA plays an integral role in patient assessment, surgical assisting, and longitudinal management. Core responsibilities include performing preoperative evaluations, first-assisting in open and endovascular procedures, coordinating postoperative care, and managing patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.

The PA is expected to exercise a high degree of clinical judgment and autonomy while functioning within the scope of practice and institutional guidelines. This includes prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. Strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset are essential to ensure efficient office workflows, optimal surgical outcomes and patient and provider satisfaction.

Qualifications

Education

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
• Completion of a surgical residency preferred.

Experience

• 2 - 5 years of PA working experience preferred, but would consider motivated new grad.
• Prior experience in wound care and/or minor office based procedures, like sclerotherapy, would be beneficial

Licenses/Certifications

• Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA)
• Must hold current national board certification (NCCPA) by first day of work and maintain.
• Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California as required by the clinical specialty.
• Must be eligible for payer enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid.
• Must hold current AHA BLS and ACLS as minimum requirement.
• Duties & Essential Job Functions
• General Clinical Duties

Collaborate with the provider team and support staff in the delivery of care and contributing to the overall patient experience

Perform clinical assessments and management services independently or in a shared visit model on new and established Vascular Surgery patients, including history and complete vascular physical exam, prescription writing and refills, referrals, etc.

• Perform wound care, utilizing best available products and therapies
• Perform minor procedures including sclerotherapy, removal of tunneled catheters and wound debridement
• Comprehensive Perioperative management of patients including but not limited to:

Surgical assisting Coordination of care between patients, families, other providers, ancillary staff Patient and staff education Facilitate efficient patient through-put and workflow in the Perioperative setting, including arrangements for add-on cases

• Rounding on patients in the hospitali
• Participate in clinical research projects and/or provide staff education
• Maintain vascular databases (VQI and any other that may be created)

Order, interpret and act upon tests, procedures, and radiographic studies. Monitor or assist with scheduling of tests by patients.

• Provide warfarin management guidance, refills and orders as needed (ie. coumadin clinic)
• Formulate and implement protocols to improve efficiency in the practice.

Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner.

Confer with attending physician as needed, when patient requests it, or if the patient’s problem is beyond his/her clinical comfort and experience.

Provide both initial and ongoing assessment and management of inpatient and emergency room consults when needed

• Document patient care activity appropriately in Apex and close all encounters within 48 hours.
• Work and interface with vendors as may be needed for patient care
• Perform other duties as set in the “Scope and Setting of Practice,” and additional roles and responsibilities.

Length of shift is usually 8-12 hours per day. The Vascular PA position is primarily a walking and standing position with sitting a secondary requirement. Infrequent very heavy lifting and pushing/pulling occurs when assisting with patient transfers and transport. Reaching at all levels is needed for patient care activities and clerical duties. Coordination and agility required to move in small spaces, manipulate equipment, transcribe orders, and operate computer/typewriter, copier, and telephone. Must have good vision and color discrimination, auditory ability, and verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with others. Frequent exposure to radiation in the form of x-rays is expected.

Lifting: Lifts light loads continuously, such as charts, small supplies and equipment in patient rooms, at nursing stations and copier. Lifts heavy loads frequently, including patient lifts and equipment and assisting patients with ambulation. Lifts very heavy loads infrequently during assists with patient transfers/transport to/from gurneys and wheelchairs. Uses appropriate lift equipment, assistive devices and additional staff as needed for very heavy and heavy loads

Carrying: Continuously carries light loads, consisting of charts, supplies and equipment. Maximum distance carried is >100 feet. Occasionally carries medium loads, equipment, and supplies.

Pushing/Pulling: Pushes light and medium loads frequently. Very heavy loads moved infrequently, assists with patient transfers/transport on gurneys and wheelchairs. Infrequently moves heavy loads such as chairs, beds and wheeled tables.

Standing: Total standing hours per work shift may be up to 10 hours. Standing may occur while communicating, treating patients, assisting with procedures, operating copier, restocking supplies and medication lockers, and assisting with patient transfers. Requires frequent moving from place to place. There is no optional position.

Walking: Total hours per work shift is 5-7 hours. Walking may occur while communicating and directing visitors and patients, retrieving and restocking supplies and documents; going to and from patient rooms, operating room, copier. There is no optional position.

Sitting: Total hours per work shift may be 3-5 hours or more. Maximum consecutive time this activity occurs is 30-60 minutes. Sitting may occur while communicating with patients, visitors, physicians and staff; operating computer/typewriter and telephone; transcribing orders, completing forms and other clerical duties. Optional position available for certain tasks.

Climbing: Occurs infrequently while obtaining or restocking supplies through use of step stool. May use stairs during emergency and when elevator unavailable.

Stooping: Occurs frequently to obtain supplies from low drawer/shelf, and perform physical exam or procedures/wound care.

Crouching: Occurs occasionally while obtaining supplies from bottom drawer/shelf, performing patient care, or to service copier.

Twisting: Occurs frequently while working at bedside and desk and changing position to perform another function.
