Job Description

Align yourself with an organization that has a reputation for excellence!

Cedars-Sinai is proud to support an inclusive and collaborative culture where outstanding talent succeeds. This opportunity as an Nurse Practitioner in our Pediatric Intensive Care Units offers an outstanding way to make a meaningful impact on patient care and outcomes. By joining, you become part of a passionate and focused team dedicated to delivering world-class healthcare!

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to critically ill and injured infants, children, and adolescents. The PICU cares for children with complex medical, surgical, neurologic, respiratory, and cardiovascular conditions and works closely with pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, rehabilitation services, child life, social work, and other members of the care team.

Our expanding PICU NP program will be an important part of this mission. NPs will practice as integrated members of the physician-led pediatric critical care team and will support the PICU, pediatric critical care transports, and the pediatric stepdown unit.

The NP will collaborate with multiple pediatric critical care physicians rather than working exclusively with a single physician. The attending physician changes according to the clinical service schedule, and the NP will work with the attending of record and the broader multidisciplinary team.

During daytime shifts, the NP will participate in multidisciplinary rounds, manage an assigned group of patients, coordinate with consulting services, perform approved procedures, and assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges.

There is a pediatric intensivist on-site and immediately available to the ICU and the step-down units 24/7/365. The NPs will have decision and procedure support as well as clinical mentoring.

The director of pediatric critical care medicine will serve as the formal supervising or collaborating physician for credentialing and program oversight.

Clinical supervision during an individual shift will align with the attending-of-record structure.

Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner will:

  • Provide direct clinical care to critically ill and medically complex pediatric patients.
  • Obtain histories, perform examinations, formulate assessments and plans, enter orders, prescribe medications within scope, and complete required documentation.
  • Participate actively in multidisciplinary rounds and communicate changes in the care plan to patients, families, and team members.
  • Manage admissions, transfers, discharges, and transitions among the PICU, stepdown unit, operating/procedural areas, and other inpatient services.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to deterioration, emergencies, rapid-response events, and resuscitations.
  • Perform bedside procedures within the NP’s demonstrated competency and approved privileges.
  • Participate in pediatric critical care transports after completing the required transport orientation and competencies.
  • Support the pediatric stepdown unit, including evaluation of new concerns, ongoing management, and escalation to the PICU when necessary.
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric intensivists, consultants, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other professionals.
  • Provide education to patients, families, nurses, trainees, and other team members.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical standardization, and development of the growing PICU NP program.
  • Maintain all required licensure, certification, continuing education, and competency requirements.
  • The daytime cardiac-focused NP will additionally be expected to develop expertise in caring for children with congenital and acquired heart disease and to contribute to the development of pediatric cardiac critical care pathways, education, and program infrastructure.
