Hospital - PRN Advanced Clinical Pharmacist

The PRN Pharmacist provides as-needed clinical and operational pharmacy services in a hospital setting to support safe, effective, and evidence-based medication use. This role is responsible for interpreting, verifying, and processing medication orders; performing drug utilization reviews; and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize pharmacotherapy. The PRN Pharmacist supports patient care needs based on variable scheduling, patient volume, and operational demand while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and institutional policies. Work is performed under the supervision of pharmacy leadership and in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of MSRH. The PRN role requires flexibility to work variable shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and call-back as needed.

Responsibilities

• Review, interpret, and verify medication orders for accuracy, dosing, route, frequency, and clinical appropriateness.
• Perform drug utilization reviews to support safe and effective medication therapy.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize pharmacotherapy.
• Provide medication-related consultation and education to healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers.
• Identify and address potential drug interactions, contraindications, and adverse drug events.
• Support medication management processes, including preparation oversight, dispensing, and verification of medications.
• Monitor patient responses to medication therapy and recommend adjustments as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate documentation of clinical activities, interventions, and medication records.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and institutional policies.
• Support efficient pharmacy operations and workflow based on patient volume and operational needs.
• Assist with medication inventory processes, including monitoring, storage, and control of pharmaceuticals as needed.
• Communicate effectively with the healthcare team to support continuity and quality of care.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on operational needs.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of state and federal pharmacy laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
• Knowledge of pharmacology, drug interactions, dosing, and medication safety principles.
• Ability to review, interpret, and verify medication orders for accuracy, appropriateness, and safety.
• Ability to perform drug utilization reviews and support evidence-based pharmacotherapy.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, patients, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Proficiency in pharmacy systems, Electronic Medical Records, and medication dispensing technologies, with the ability to document accurately and comply with regulatory and safety standards.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to variable schedules and operational demands typical of PRN assignments.

• Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
• Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
• Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
• Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year.
