Dental Hygienist

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time, Dental Hygienist to work in Miami.

Core Job Summary

The Dental Hygienist cleans calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums using dental instruments under the direct supervision of a dentist. Additionally, the Dental Hygienist feels lymph nodes under patient's chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer and feels and visually examines gums for sores and signs of disease. The incumbent provides clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health.

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs root planning and procedures that smooth and clean the root of the tooth.
  • Takes and develops dental X-rays to help diagnose problems.
  • Performs prophylaxis, oral irrigation, fluoride treatments, and sealants to help prevent cavities.

Educates patients on how to prevent dental problems, emphasizing the importance of good nutrition, proper brushing, and regular dental check-ups.

  • Assists dentist with procedures.
  • Maintains records on dental status of patients and services rendered.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments and requisition supplies.

Attends seminars and training to enhance knowledge and to keep abreast of new technologies in the dental hygienist field.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, per federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

Works independently in conjunction with dental providers and practice manager(s), to manage a busy daily schedule of patients requiring Hygienist services.

Coordinate with dental providers to timely complete hygiene services as needed/ordered to maintain continuity of care.

All other functions as required of departmental operational needs including and/or not limited to functions of a dental assistant (if certified as dental assistant).

  • Associate degree in relevant field
  • Certification in relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
