Job Description
Emergency Pet Care is seeking a full-time or part-time Emergency Veterinarian with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited veterinary school and an active Alabama veterinary license. This role combines a varied emergency caseload with advanced clinical resources and support from experienced technicians in an emergency veterinary hospital.
Your Role
As an Emergency Veterinarian, you will use sound clinical judgment to assess patients, guide diagnostic decisions, and manage emergency treatment. Your responsibilities will include:
- Evaluating and triaging patients with urgent and life-threatening conditions.
- Using diagnostic findings to develop treatment plans.
- Stabilizing and treating critically ill or injured patients.
- Managing cases such as trauma, toxicities, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), respiratory distress, heatstroke, and snake envenomations.
- Coordinating patient care with veterinary technicians and support staff.
- The role requires clear communication, composure under pressure, and the ability to work independently with team support.
Experience and Mentorship
Previous experience in emergency or critical care is preferred but not required. Veterinarians of all experience levels, including new graduates, are encouraged to apply.
Mentorship is available, and our team values continued professional development. Candidates should also be prepared for a clinical environment that requires independent judgment and resilience during demanding cases.
Scheduling and Support
The hospital offers flexible scheduling options for full-time and part-time positions. Shifts are shared across the team, and overnight coverage is supported by experienced technicians and support staff.
- Our hospital operates during the hours general practices are closed:
- Friday–Monday: Open 24 hours
Tuesday–Thursday: 6 p. m.–7 a. m.
- These hours describe hospital operations rather than an individual veterinarian’s shift.
- Life in Trussville, Alabama
Trussville offers a close-knit community northeast of Birmingham, with local restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and boutiques. Birmingham’s cultural, culinary, and music scenes are nearby, while destinations such as Ruffner Mountain and Red Mountain provide opportunities to spend time outdoors.
Whether you enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, or biking, the area offers ways to recharge outside the hospital while staying connected to the amenities of a larger city.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation is tailored to your experience and availability. Our package includes:
- Competitive base salary or hourly rate
- Shift differentials for overnight and weekend coverage
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- CE allowance and paid CE time
- Paid time off
- Coverage of state and DEA licensing fees
