Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing operations in a skilled nursing and long-term care setting.
The Director of Nursing will oversee the delivery of safe, efficient, high-quality, and resident-centered care. This position is responsible for nursing department leadership, staffing, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, clinical documentation, care planning, and staff development.
Previous long-term care/skilled nursing experience is preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop, manage, and monitor the annual nursing department budget.
- Recruit, interview, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and effective use of scheduling systems.
- Promote a safe, collaborative, and high-quality work environment.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, policies, and standards.
- Participate in state and federal nursing home surveys and regulatory inspections.
- Prepare Plans of Correction (POCs) when required and ensure timely implementation.
- Participate in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/CQI) programs.
- Lead the management, monitoring, and auditing of electronic medical records (EMR), including documentation, reports, dashboards, and staff training.
- Stay current with changes in regulations, clinical practices, programs, and nursing standards.
- Oversee timely completion of pre-admission and comprehensive nursing assessments.
- Ensure individualized resident care plans are developed, implemented, evaluated, and updated appropriately.
- Monitor the effectiveness of nursing interventions and make adjustments as needed.
- Ensure resident rights, dignity, privacy, and choices are respected.
- Ensure residents are protected from abuse, neglect, and inappropriate treatment.
- Promptly report and address concerns involving resident rights, abuse, or neglect in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
- Ensure residents have appropriate access to their medical records.
- Ensure physicians are promptly notified of changes in resident condition and that orders are processed accurately and timely.
- Maintain thorough, accurate, and timely resident documentation.
- Ensure nursing staff are appropriately trained and follow required procedures and systems.
- Participate in care conferences, special events, committees, and task forces.
- Promote resident-centered communication and explain procedures clearly to residents.
- Monitor residents for physical and emotional changes and ensure appropriate interventions are initiated.
- Ensure families or responsible parties are appropriately notified of significant changes in resident condition.
- Promote and monitor adherence to antibiotic stewardship practices.
- Foster effective communication and cooperation between nursing and other departments.
- Exercise sound judgment and decision-making in clinical and administrative matters.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related requirement based on applicable organizational standards.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state of practice.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Previous supervisory or nursing leadership experience preferred.
- Previous long-term care/skilled nursing experience preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Director of Nursing will directly supervise assigned employees and perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
