Job Description
The Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a full-time psychiatrist to serve as the Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services in the Institute for Advanced Medicine (IAM) and the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS).
The Institute for Advanced Medicine (IAM) at Mount Sinai delivers holistic primary and specialty care to New York’s diverse and underserved populations, including the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS communities. As part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, IAM integrates cutting-edge clinical research with comprehensive on-site specialty services to ensure equitable care regardless of financial barriers.
The Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS) is a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary program dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. One of the first comprehensive programs of its kind in the United States, CTMS brings together experts in primary care, endocrinology, behavioral health, surgery, gynecology, urology, social work, and other specialties to provide integrated, patient-centered care.
In addition to their clinical missions, both IAM and CTMS are committed to advancing the field through education, research, and the training of the next generation of clinicians. Professionals in these programs work within an inclusive, multi-lingual environment dedicated to reducing health disparities and training future healthcare providers in compassionate care.
Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership & Oversight: Define clinical protocols, oversee quality assurance, and supervise psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners to maintain high standards of patient care.
- Integrated Care Delivery: Champion a holistic model of care by collaborating with primary care physicians, psychologists, social workers, case managers, and multi-lingual patient navigators to treat the whole patient.
- Direct Patient Care: Provide high-quality psychiatric evaluations, psychopharmacological management, surgical evaluations, and crisis intervention to a diverse patient panel with complex medical and psychosocial needs.
- Academic & Training Excellence: Train and mentor the next generation of physicians, residents, and fellows in comprehensive, compassionate psychiatric care tailored to the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS communities.
- Program Director – Transgender Psychiatry Fellowship: Build didactics and curricula for a PGY5 psychiatric fellow. Collaborate with Graduate Medical Education Office to manage program requirements.
- Program & Research Innovation: Expand specialized mental health programs, support connections to social services (e. g., housing, legal aid), and identify opportunities for patients to participate in groundbreaking clinical trials.
- Co-lead Behavioral Health Services across campuses: Partner with the Director of Psychology at IAM to lead, develop, and expand comprehensive mental health services for this vulnerable patient population across Mount Sinai Health System campuses.
Qualifications
- Board Certified in Psychiatry
- Possess a NYS license to practice medicine
- Excellent clinical knowledge and communication skills
- Experience working with LGBTQ+ populations and a demonstrated commitment to this area of care
- Expertise working with transgender patient populations, familiarity with the WPATH treatment criteria, knowledge of gender affirming medical interventions (hormones and surgery)
- Must possess highly collaborative and proactive approach, and demonstrate commitment to high-quality, cost-effective health care
- A strong work ethic and desire to participate in and grow a team-oriented, performance-driven department
- Prior experience serving at the Medical Director level is preferred
Compensation range from 240K to 305K (not including bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits).
