Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: Physician Assistant duties will include, but not be limited to: performing examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic and screening tests, prescribing and ordering medication as appropriate for patients’ medical conditions, and referring patients for further care as clinically appropriate.
If the primary supervising physician has a question about the management of a patient’s medical condition, then they should review and discuss the patient’s medical record and medical plan with the physician assistant.
Duties And
- RESPONSIBILITIES: *ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- 1. Responsible for providing primary care for all age groups
2. Will refer patients with a high degree of medical complexity to physician for duration of patient’s care. Some patients will be co-managed
- 3. Act as agent of supervising physician in the ordering of diagnostic, therapeutic and other medical services
- 4. Provide supervision to clinical staff as an agent of the supervising physician
5. Prescribe medications under the rules and regulations set forth by the North Carolina Medical Board. The supervising physician will decide which medications the physician assistant will be allowed to prescribe. Also administers injections, immunizations and oral medication
6. Must be familiar with indications, contraindications, adverse reactions and interactions of all medications prescribed
7. All prescriptions, whether initiated during an office visit, from telephone consultation or regarding routine refills must be documented and dated in the patient’s record
8. Prescriptions for non-controlled substances may be written for up to a three months’ supply, unless otherwise approved. Refills for non-controlled substances may be written for up to one year
9. Dictate tests and examination results in a timely and efficient manner
10. May request, receive and sign for professional samples and may distribute samples to patients complying with appropriate federal and state regulations
11. Obtain complete medical history and physical data on patients. Review patient records
12. Synthesize data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention
13. Interview and advise patients regarding health and illness prevention *The "Essential" and "Non-Essential" functions of the job are listed due to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The breakout of these different functions will not impact the Wage and Salary Program
14. Instruct patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provide patient education
- 15. Triage patient phone calls and provide consultation
- 16. Perform independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations
- 17. Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits
- 18. Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested
- 19. Participate in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations
- 20. Maintain strictest patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations
21. Adhere to CarolinaEast Health System’s “Standards of Excellence” and participate in “Here to Serve” training to support our culture of excellence.

- MINIMUM
Requirements
1. Must demonstrate successful completion of Baccalaureate Degree or a minimum of two years of college in an accredited PA Education Program and be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
2. Maintain BLS/ACLS certifications
3. Must work under the supervision of an M. D
4. A copy of the PA’s Scope of Service must be on file at CIM and CarolinaEast Health System
Continuing Medical
Education
1. In order to maintain physician assistant approval, documentation must be maintained by the physician assistant of 100 hours of CEHS for every two year period, at least 40 hours of which must be AMA Category 1 or equivalent CEHS

CEHS documentation must be available upon inspection by the North Carolina Medical Board or an agent of the Board upon request *The "Essential" and "Non-Essential" functions of the job are listed due to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Physical and Mental
Requirements
- 1. Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- 2. Require standing and walking for prolonged periods of time
- 3. Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds
- 4. Require normal visual acuity and hearing
- 5. Require exposure to communicable disease and bodily fluids
- 6. Require working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular

Key Responsibilities
The Physician Assistant will perform patient examinations, order diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications while providing primary care across all age groups. They will also triage patient calls, provide patient education, and perform independent evaluations during emergency situations.
