Job Description
The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist/Clinical Education, Mother/Baby.
Reporting directly to the Director of Nursing for Maternal Child Health, the
Successful Candidate Will
- Function as a clinical educator and nursing service expert.
- Assess learning needs of clinical staff and implement evidence-based education to enhance maternal-fetal care
- Develop and implement orientation plans for new employees and follow orientees through their orientation
- Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Professional Development to adjust the program based on evaluation results.
- Coordinate, mentor and work with new orientees and preceptors
- Collaborate with OB team to conduct simulations/drills to follow regulatory standards
- Monitor nursing care quality standards and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Attend and participate in committees to represent nursing staff needs and the individual population, and participate in writing of care standards.
- Identify staff training needs and collaborate with the ICL Department of Nursing Education to develop and implement educational programs.
- Participate in evaluating staff competency.
- Design and identify educational activities to address practice gaps for identified target audiences, including licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel.
- Develop activities to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skill, and practice.
Plans educational content delivery that encourages learner engagement.
- Promote and integrate evidence-based practice (EBP) to continuously improve practice.
- Conduct, encourage, facilitate, and/or participate in research, EBP, and QI in patient care settings.
- Identify and develop strategies to facilitate a continuous maturation process through lifelong learning.
- Utilizes novice-to-expert continuum when developing staff.
- Identifies and provides opportunities for skill enhancement and mastery.
- Works with Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing to achieve annual unit goals and objectives
- Maintain staff educational log and ensure staff are up to date in clinical knowledge
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.
- 5+ years of experience in the specialty, to include some level of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of performance improvement and regulatory requirements (e. g. TJC requirements)
- Proficient oral and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively as a team leader in a dynamic, academic healthcare setting, proactive in planning and implementing change
- American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, NRP and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certifications (instructor certification preferred)
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Member of Professional Organization, AWHONN
- Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training
