Wound Care Physician

Job Details: Job Location: Main PA - 720 Pleasanton Rd. - San Antonio, TX, Position Type: Full Time, Salary Range: Undisclosed, Job Category: Specialist, General Summary: The Wound Care Physician provides outpatient evaluation and longitudinal management of patients with chronic, complex, and nonhealing wounds.

The physician works with the Wound Care team, primary care, Urgent Care, Home Health, and other specialists to develop treatment plans and coordinate follow-up. Supervisory Responsibilities: General Requirements: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

All duties performed will be done accurately and in a timely manner. Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical competencies according to Gonzaba Medical Group policy. Ensures customer service is always maintained at the highest level.

Exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, visitors, providers, and co-workers. Must always adhere to customer service expectations including in-person and virtual (via telephone, or telehealth applications) communication. Participates in educational programs as needed.

Ability to work collaboratively across specialties and communicate clear, timely plans to referring clinicians and care teams. Demonstrated clinical experience managing chronic wounds and performing outpatient wound-care procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Evaluate and manage diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure injuries, arterial or mixed-etiology wounds, postoperative wounds, and other complex wounds appropriate for outpatient care.

Assess factors affecting healing, including perfusion, infection, edema, pressure, diabetes, and mobility. Order appropriate testing and refer promptly when a patient needs vascular, podiatric, infectious disease, surgical, or emergency evaluation.

Perform wound-care procedures within the physician’s training and privileges, including debridement and compression therapy. Manage advanced dressings, offloading, and negative pressure wound therapy (wound VAC) when indicated.

Coordinate care for appropriate patients referred by primary care, Urgent Care, or following hospital discharge, including patients with postoperative wounds or a wound VAC. Review referrals clinically and arrange follow-up according to patient needs and clinic capacity.

Provide clear treatment orders for nursing and Home Health; document wound measurements, progress, procedures, and changes in the care plan. Educate patients and caregivers about wound care, prevention, and when to seek urgent evaluation.

Qualifications

Education and Training: MD or DO with completed residency training, board certification or eligibility in an appropriate primary specialty, and eligibility for an unrestricted Texas medical license.

Formal wound-care fellowship or other substantial advanced wound-care training; physician wound-care certification, such as CWSP, is preferred. Experience: Experience with diabetic foot care, venous disease, vascular assessment, negative pressure wound therapy, and care transitions after hospitalization.

Experience evaluating venous disease or performing vein procedures would be an additional advantage, but should not be required for this wound-care position. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred not required. Other Requirements: Computer Skills: Skilled in use of computer/EMR systems.

Knowledge of Word processing software, spreadsheet software, Internet, and database software. Work Environment: Clinic environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Mental / Physical Requirements: Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, walking, lifting up to 40 lbs. without assistance. Close vision and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work efficiently under pressure.
