Job Description
Position Summary
The System Medical Director for Complex Medical and Pediatric Services provides enterprise physician leadership for pediatric and medically complex care across Nexus Health Systems.
In alignment with Nexus Health Systems’ strategy, clinical vision, and organizational priorities, the System Medical Director is responsible for defining, implementing, and advancing the medical model for patients with complex, chronic, and multisystem medical needs; establishing enterprise clinical standards, clinical pathways, and physician practice expectations; promoting evidence-based practice; and advancing quality, patient safety, clinical outcomes, physician performance, and clinical capabilities across applicable programs and services.
The System Medical Director collaborates with Facility Medical Directors, Program Medical Directors, and clinical and operational leaders to promote consistent clinical practice, evaluate performance and outcomes, reduce unwarranted variation, and continuously advance the delivery of complex medical and pediatric care.

- Collaborates effectively with colleagues and other departments to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Provide enterprise physician leadership for complex medical and pediatric services across Nexus Health Systems.
- Define, implement, and advance the medical model for complex medical and pediatric services in alignment with Nexus Health Systems’ strategy, clinical vision, and organizational priorities.
- Establish and promote consistent clinical standards, clinical capabilities, physician practice expectations, and evidence-based care across applicable programs and facilities.
- Provide physician leadership and guidance to Facility Medical Directors, Program Medical Directors, and other physician leaders within the assigned clinical domain.
- Promote clinical integration, physician alignment, and interdisciplinary collaboration across complex medical and pediatric services.
- Evaluate clinical performance, capabilities, and opportunities for improvement and advancement of the service line.
- Collaborate with executive, operational, and clinical leadership in the development, growth, and strategic advancement of complex medical and pediatric services.
- Serve as a physician consultant for complex clinical issues, transfers, and program development.
- Support strategic growth, referral development, and expansion of pediatric and complex medical service lines.
- Clinical Excellence
- Promote evidence-based medical care and consistent physician practice across complex medical and pediatric services.
- Support implementation of standardized clinical pathways, protocols, and physician practice expectations.
- Provide physician leadership regarding staffing models, medical coverage expectations, consultation, and physician escalation pathways.
- Support development and monitoring of quality metrics and clinical outcome measures for pediatric and medically complex populations.
- Provide specialty-specific physician guidance regarding complex clinical issues, transfers, and clinical capability determinations, as needed.
- Support ongoing evaluation of clinical capabilities and recommend enhancements to safely develop and expand services across the System.
- Promote developmentally appropriate and medically integrated care for patients with complex medical and neurodevelopmental needs.
- Collaborate with Facility Medical Directors, Program Medical Directors, and other physician leaders to reduce unwarranted variation in clinical practice.
- Support innovation and continuous improvement in complex medical and pediatric care delivery.
- Patient Experience and Advocacy
- Champion a patient- and family-centered care model, particularly for vulnerable populations with neurodevelopmental disorders and complex needs.
- Promote trauma-informed, communication-adapted, and behaviorally appropriate care approaches.
- Ensure care delivery is aligned with ethical standards, dignity, and patient rights.
- Address barriers to care access, coordination, and continuity across the system.
- Support engagement with patients, families, and caregivers to improve satisfaction and outcomes.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Ensures all activities adhere to healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery.
- Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
- Provide physician leadership for quality, patient safety, and clinical performance within complex medical and pediatric services.
- Support development and monitoring of quality metrics, patient safety indicators, and clinical outcomes.
- Review clinical performance, significant events, transfers, and trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Participate in peer review, OPPE, FPPE, and physician performance improvement activities in accordance with applicable Medical Staff processes and policies.
- Participate in System-level clinical governance, quality, patient safety, and physician leadership committees as assigned.
- Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer, Facility Medical Directors, Quality, Risk Management, Compliance, and other appropriate leaders to support regulatory and accreditation compliance and readiness and to address clinical quality, physician performance, patient safety, and regulatory concerns.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and transparent reporting aligned with just culture principles.
- Professional Growth and Continuing Education
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements.
- Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments.
- Participates in relevant workshops, seminars, and continuing education courses to stay current with industry trends, healthcare regulations, and best practices.
- Participates in relevant continuing education and professional development activities to remain current with clinical advances, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership development for physicians and advanced practice providers within the assigned clinical domain.
- Support physician and advanced practice provider recruitment, onboarding, engagement, and retention.
- Promote ongoing professional development aligned with specialty standards, emerging evidence, and clinical innovation.
- Support competency development and participation in applicable professional practice and performance evaluation processes.
- Foster a culture of interdisciplinary learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Finance
- Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care.
- Provide physician input regarding medical equipment, clinical technologies, and resources necessary to support pediatric and complex medical programs.
- Support development of physician staffing models and medical coverage recommendations based on patient acuity, program needs, and clinical capabilities.
- Promote evidence-based utilization of diagnostics, therapies, medications, and specialty resources to support high-quality, cost-conscious medical care.
- Collaborate with executive and operational leadership regarding the clinical feasibility and medical resource needs of new and expanding service lines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
Experience
Minimum 7 Years of Progressive Clinical Experience In
- Pediatric, rehabilitation, complex medical, or neurodevelopmental care
- Minimum 3 years of physician leadership experience (Medical Director, Service Line Leader, or equivalent).
Demonstrated Experience In
- Multisite or system-level clinical leadership
- Quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- Interdisciplinary care coordination
Skills
Advanced Knowledge Of
- Advanced knowledge of pediatric and medically complex populations, including patients with chronic, multisystem, neurodevelopmental, and behavioral health needs.
- Strong leadership and influence skills across interdisciplinary teams.
Expertise In

Licensure/Certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) from American Heart Association/American Red Cross required, must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from date of hire
- Current, unrestricted physician license from the State of Texas (Texas Medical Board) (required).
