$100,000.00 - $300,000.00

The Medical Director of Urgent Care provides clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for pediatric urgent care services (in-person and telemedicine).

This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, and patient-centered care while supporting organizational priorities related to access, growth, and financial stewardship.

The Medical Director partners closely with nursing, administrative, and other operational leaders to advance clinical excellence, patient experience, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Education

Medical Doctor (M.D.) Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school. Completion of pediatric residency training in an accredited program. (Required)

Master's Degree Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Healthcare Administration, or related field. (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience

5 years Clinical experience in pediatric care. (Required)

3 years Clinical experience in pediatric urgent care. (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in pediatric urgent care.
  • Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making and performance improvement.
  • Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and change management skills.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Personal commitment to Continuing Medical Education and remains current on the developments and progress in pediatric urgent care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  • Previous experience managing a division, department, or program in an academic setting.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Physician Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children’s National Medical Center (Required) Board certified or eligible for board certification in pediatrics (Required)

Functional Accountabilities

Provide pediatric urgent care services for patients at approved sites in an ethical, professional and timely manner.

Provide oversight of the medical care team to ensure high-quality, evidence-based pediatric urgent care services.

Actively participate in family centered care and communicate in a professional and compassionate manner; refer patients to medical homes, specialists, and relevant ancillary services as appropriate.

  • Appropriately utilize the defined chain of command and escalation policies.
  • Respond to team members in a timely and respectful manner; communicate expectations clearly to trainees regarding communication with patients and families and documentation in the electronic health record; encourage questions from trainees.
  • Foster a team approach to patient care to continuously strive to improve patient and staff satisfaction.

Clinical & Operational Leadership

Serve as the physician leader for day-to-date urgent care operations in partnership with nursing and administrative leadership.

Support access optimization, patient flow and throughput, patient experience, and follow-up with primary and/or specialty care.

Collaborate on staffing models and productivity optimization. Manage provider scheduling.

Serve as clinical liaison with primary care, subspecialty services, emergency medicine, and community partners.

  • Contribute to system-wide initiatives related to access, value-based care, and population health.
  • Align urgent care strategy with broader ambulatory, primary care, and hospital system goals.
  • Participate in planning and execution of new site development, service expansion, and operational redesign.

Commitment to Education

Participate in CNMC's medical education programs through learning activities with colleagues and trainees. Encourage clinical education, guideline dissemination, and best practices in pediatric acute care.

  • Participate as appropriate in hospital/university–wide educational programs.
  • Participate as appropriate in local, regional and national educational efforts.
  • Provide timely feedback to trainees.
  • Ensure adequate orientation for the care that the trainees deliver.
  • Supervise and train clinical professionals and students effectively.
  • Serve as a resource for information about pediatric urgent care and share educational resources with other professional staff members.

Commitment to Quality & Compliance

Follow established bylaws, policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

Promptly complete all clinical documentation and charge entry as required by regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and Policies and Procedures.

  • Participate as appropriate in local, regional and national educational efforts.
  • Establish and maintain pediatric urgent care standardized clinical pathways, protocols, and scope-of-practice guidelines.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with all agencies.

Participate in evaluation of peers and support staff; acknowledge and report medical and/or other errors as well as participate in efforts to prevent them. Review clinical performance metrics and lead corrective actions as needed.

Administrative Accountabilities

Plan and develop evidence-based patient care programs. Monitor performance dashboard and implement change based on current data.

  • Effectively direct operations and maintain good communication with the Division Chief and other leadership.
  • Meet regularly with staff and provide leadership needed to achieve medical care goals.
  • Keep medical staff informed about changes in policies and procedures.
  • Display empathy, sensitivity, and emotional control when interacting with patients or when coaching direct reports.
  • Attend and present at Divisional, Center-wide and/or organizational meetings.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Division Chief.

Business and Financial Accountabilities

Partner with the Division Chief and other leadership on budget planning, financial performance, and resource utilization. Review budget performance reports, analyze cause of variances, and develop and implement action plans to achieve financial goals.

Support initiatives related to revenue optimization, revenue integrity, clinical documentation, and coding compliance.

Use data and dashboards to inform decision-making and performance improvement.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children’s National believes an individual’s base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range.

The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children’s National compensation philosophy.
