The veterinarian must be able to perform well in an environment that can be hectic and challenging but ultimately is very rewarding.

When working in the shelter, in concert with the management team, this position will work to manage medical care and health management programs for the shelter animals, including those temporarily in foster care, focusing on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems.

Will perform surgical procedures on shelter animals, as needed, (spay/neuter, hernia repair, growth removals, dental extractions). Aids in the decisions of euthanasia for an animal, including performing euthanasia.

This position will also help to ensure that staff are following herd health protocols and proper sanitation practices.

When working in the clinic, this position will be responsible for practicing compassionate medicine and surgery as a vital member of a cohesive team of veterinarians and paraprofessionals managing the gamut of cases from routine preventive medicine to challenging outpatient medicine cases.

This ideal professional will also be responsible for performing soft tissue surgeries including but not limited to tumor removal, cystotomy, cherry eye repair, amputations, routine dentistry, and spay/neuter.

Qualifications

Education: DVM. Current license to practice in the US, will help obtain state licensure if needed. Experience: 2-5 years working in a clinic or shelter setting or experienced clinician. Previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters, is preferred. Skills: Ability to perform soft tissue and spay/neuter surgery.

Diagnose and prescribe treatments for diseases and medical conditions, ability to perform physically strenuous activities which will require lifting of moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.), standing and/or bending, walking and/or controlling dogs and/or cats, use of cleaning solutions, and sitting at a desk for long periods of time.
