The Veterinarian of Record will be responsible for the medical care and oversight of animals housed at the shelter, ensuring that appropriate examinations, preventive care, diagnostics, treatments, and disease-control measures are implemented.
The position requires regular onsite visits, coordination with shelter personnel, medical record management, medication oversight, and compliance with applicable New Jersey veterinary and public health requirements.
The veterinarian will also support public rabies clinics, staff education, emergency-care planning, and consultation concerning animal health and welfare.
This is a part-time professional services engagement rather than a traditional full-time employment opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the designated Veterinarian of Record for Hamilton Township Animal Shelter.
- Perform routine veterinary examinations and evaluate the health and medical condition of animals housed at the shelter.
- Provide diagnostic services, vaccinations, treatments, and other necessary veterinary care.
- Visit the shelter at least once every week to provide veterinary services and medical oversight.
- Conduct weekly visual health assessments of shelter animals.
- Develop and support disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak management procedures.
- Assist shelter personnel with emergency-care planning and veterinary consultation.
- Provide or oversee rabies vaccinations and participate in up to five public rabies clinics annually.
- Conduct a minimum of four staff in-service training sessions covering relevant animal health and care topics.
- Maintain complete and accurate medical records for animals receiving veterinary services.
- Ensure appropriate documentation and compliance with applicable veterinary regulations.
- Prescribe, dispense, and oversee medications, including controlled substances, in accordance with applicable laws and professional standards.
- Provide guidance on parasite prevention, pain management, and ongoing animal wellness.
- Support investigations involving zoonotic diseases and other public health concerns.
- Provide veterinary guidance concerning euthanasia decisions in accordance with applicable ethical and regulatory requirements.
- Provide consultation and arrange appropriate backup veterinary coverage when necessary.
- Supply or coordinate the provision of necessary medical and surgical supplies.
- Collaborate with shelter management and staff to support animal welfare and operational needs.
- Comply with applicable New Jersey veterinary laws, professional ethics, and contractual obligations.
Required Qualifications
Must possess a valid veterinary license in good standing with the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
- Must be legally authorized to provide professional veterinary services in the United States.
- Must be registered to conduct business in the State of New Jersey.
- Must be able to prescribe and dispense medications in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Must comply with applicable veterinary professional and ethical standards.
- Must be capable of providing onsite veterinary services at least once per week.
- Must be able to provide consultation and backup coverage.
- Must be capable of managing routine examinations, diagnostics, vaccinations, and treatments.
- Must demonstrate the ability to support disease prevention, outbreak management, and public health initiatives.
- Must be able to maintain accurate medical records and compliance documentation.
- Must be willing to receive rabies pre-exposure vaccination at the contractor's expense.
- Must not be listed on the State's debarred contractor/vendor list.
- Must comply with all applicable contractual, regulatory, and professional requirements.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a valid veterinary license in good standing with the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and be authorized to practice in the United States. Applicants must be capable of providing onsite services weekly and managing all aspects of animal medical care and public health initiatives.
