Job Description
About Lifedoc Health
If you are an experienced, mission-driven leader passionate about healthcare innovation and community impact, we invite you to apply and grow with Lifedoc Health. Lifedoc Health is a multidisciplinary, mission-driven organization committed to transforming health outcomes for underserved communities in Memphis and the Mid-South. We empower patients through comprehensive care, education, and research.
Position Summary
The Medical Director is a practicing physician and clinical leader responsible for ensuring high-quality care, developing providers, and improving measurable patient and population health outcomes.
Working closely with the Chief Clinical Officer, with both roles reporting to the CMO, the Medical Director oversees medical practice standards, supervises assigned providers, conducts clinical case reviews, and implements approved clinical priorities.
The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in integrated cardiometabolic care, effective leadership of multidisciplinary teams, and a commitment to underserved populations. The role requires the ability to translate clinical evidence and population data into practical improvements in care while advancing Lifedoc’s education and research programs.
Through mentoring and professional development, the Medical Director will help prepare the next generation of Lifedoc clinicians and staff who embody Lifedoc’s mission, collaborate across disciplines, and apply continuous learning to patient care.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a physician who earns credibility through excellent patient care and helps colleagues improve through respectful, practical leadership.
This individual is comfortable caring for complex patients, discussing performance openly, and using evidence to reconsider established practices. The candidate understands that meaningful outcomes depend on both clinical decisions and the circumstances in which patients live.
The successful Medical Director will be able to move between individual patient care and organizational improvement: recognizing a recurring clinical problem, asking a useful question, examining the data, working with colleagues to develop a response, and assessing whether that response improves care.
The role requires a close, productive partnership with the CCO and alignment with CMO's transformation agenda. It also requires the confidence to offer thoughtful recommendations, the humility to learn, and the discipline to carry agreed priorities through to completion.
Essential Responsibilities
The Medical Director is accountable for the quality of medical practice and the clinical performance of assigned providers according to Lifedoc’s standards. Both the Medical Director and CCO report to the CMO, who sets clinical and scientific direction. The Medical Director leads medical implementation, while the CCO coordinates clinical programs and multidisciplinary workflows.
Deliver and Oversee Medical Care
Maintain active clinical practice, provide consultation for complex cases, and ensure evidence-based care within the assigned clinical scope.
Emphasize cardiometabolic prevention and treatment, with care plans responsive to the needs of underserved patients.
Evaluate new programs for clinical benefit, operational feasibility, patient access, and sustainability.
Supervise and Develop Providers
Evaluate the clinical performance of assigned providers through chart reviews, case discussions, and direct feedback.
Establish clear practice expectations, address performance gaps, and contribute to provider selection and onboarding.
Mentor the next generation of Lifedoc providers through practical clinical teaching.
Implement Lifedoc’s Clinical Standards
- Translate approved clinical priorities into consistent medical practice.
- Guide providers in applying cardiometabolic protocols, making appropriate referrals, and ensuring reliable follow-up.
- Work with the CCO to resolve workflow barriers that affect care.
- Participate in the quality improvement and assurance program.
- Partner with operations and clinical leadership to improve timely access, referral completion, and reliable follow-up.
- Escalate urgent safety concerns and follow through on assigned corrective actions.
- Participate in approved community, payer, academic, and research partnerships.
Improve Outcomes and Patient Safety
- Use clinical data, care-gap reports, and safety reviews to identify problems and lead corrective actions within the medical team.
- Monitor whether changes improve outcomes, address disparities, and support FQHC clinical quality expectations.
- Provide medical input into credentialing and privileging decisions.
- Support accurate clinical quality reporting, including applicable Uniform Data System measures, in partnership with quality and data staff.
- Help prepare clinical documentation and evidence for organizational reviews.
Integrate Research Into Clinical Practice
Identify research questions arising from patient care and contribute to approved studies, teaching, and scholarly work.
Participate in investigation projects, protect research participants, and help providers apply validated findings to improve care.
