Job Description

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Nurse Practitioner at HUHS works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide preventive, episodic, and ongoing health care to the University community from adolescence through older adulthood. The Nurse Practitioner provides care within their scope of practice and in accordance with applicable state laws, licensure requirements, regulations, institutional policies, and practice agreements.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Demonstrates knowledge of the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and epidemiology of medical conditions relevant to the area of practice.

Performs accurate, complete, concise, and clinically relevant health histories and physical examinations appropriate to the patient’s age, gender, and presenting problem.

  • Orders appropriate diagnostic studies and accurately interprets the results.
  • Uses critical thinking to synthesize and analyze clinical data.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies individualized plans of care as needed.
  • Manages general medical and surgical conditions using knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions, and adverse reactions associated with pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in procedural skills relevant to the area of practice.

Provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered care that promotes health, prevents illness, and treats disease across the designated patient population.

Counsels and educates patients and families, incorporates them into care planning and treatment decisions, and promotes shared decision-making through effective communication.

  • Advocates for patients and families in navigating the health care system.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, concise, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Facilitates coordinated care and clear communication among physicians, other health professionals, health-related agencies, patients, and families across care settings.
  • Refers patients appropriately to specialty services.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team.

Provides care that reflects an understanding of the patient’s individual characteristics, identities, cultural backgrounds, health literacy, abilities, and preferences.

Follows ethical principles related to patient confidentiality, informed consent, and disclosure and management of unanticipated adverse outcomes.

  • Demonstrates a high level of accountability for professional practice.
  • Participates in self-evaluation and actively seeks and incorporates guidance and constructive feedback.
  • Pursues opportunities for ongoing clinical advancement and development of knowledge and skills.

Maintains effectiveness as circumstances and priorities change; demonstrates flexibility, resilience, and adaptability.

Participates in organizational and departmental meetings, educational activities, committees, and workgroups as needed.

  • Considers cost-effectiveness and risk-benefit considerations when making decisions about patient care.
  • Uses evidence-based medicine to evaluate and improve patient care practices.
  • Participates in quality-improvement and performance-improvement activities.

Participates in the evaluation and implementation of standards of care, policies, protocols, and other practice guidelines within the area of specialization.

Identifies and maintains age-specific competencies for direct and indirect patient care for the following populations:

  • Adolescent: 13–19 year
  • Young adult: 20–40 years
  • Middle adult: 41–64 years
  • Older adult: 65 years and older

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion
  • Ability to stand for extended periods

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills
  • Experience with emergency/urgent care and associated procedures, phlebotomy, IV insertion, previous Nurse Practitioner experience, travel health counseling

Previous Experience with an Electronic Medical Record

Ability to organize tasks, problem solve, and respond in times of multiple demands and urgent situations

Certificates and Licenses

Licensed in Massachusetts with authorization to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of Massachusetts

Standard Hours/Schedule

Schedule is Monday - Friday. 1 weekend every 4th weekend. When working the weekend, they do not work the Friday before and the Monday after. Weekend shifts are also 8 hours.

  • Required 40-hours - 8:30-4:00 M-F Weekends at 9-5:30 or 9:30-6:00
  • May be required to work nights and weekends.
