Job Title: Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician

Shifts: 8-hour workday with flexibility and a weekend call rotation 1/4 weekends

Compensation: Pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to job-specific requirements, individual experience, internal pay equity, and organizational needs/budget considerations, all in alignment with our RML's compensation philosophy. Additionally, you may be eligible for a discretionary annual incentive program based on both individual and organizational performance.

General Summary

The Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician contributes to the effectiveness of RML Specialty Hospital through the delivery of comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based medical care to patients with complex medical and pulmonary conditions. The physician provides clinical leadership and medical management for adult and geriatric patients throughout their hospitalization in the long-term acute care setting.

The Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients with complex pulmonary and critical care needs, with particular emphasis on acute and chronic respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, ventilator management and weaning, tracheostomy care, and other complex pulmonary conditions. The physician works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary care team, including nursing, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation services, pharmacy, case management, and other healthcare professionals, to develop and implement individualized plans of care that support optimal clinical outcomes and patient recovery.

The physician communicates effectively with patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, prognosis, goals of care, and transitions in care, while providing support and guidance during complex medical decisions. The physician is expected to demonstrate sound clinical judgment, strong communication and leadership skills, and a commitment to RML Specialty Hospital’s mission of providing compassionate, respectful, and clinically excellent care to patients facing complex medical challenges.

The Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician will also participate in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical education, and other initiatives that support RML’s commitment to clinical excellence, accountability, and patient-centered care.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities

The Physician or Physicians Involved Shall

1. Provide comprehensive pulmonary and critical care consultation and medical management for LTACH patients.

2. Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure and other complex pulmonary conditions.

3. Provide expertise in mechanical ventilation, ventilator management, and ventilator weaning.

4. Participating in the assessment and management of patients require prolonged respiratory support.

5. Diagnose and treat pulmonary conditions, including COPD, pneumonia, ARDS, pulmonary infections, and other complex respiratory disorders.

6. Collaborate with respiratory therapy regarding ventilator strategies, respiratory treatments, and weaning plans.

7. Work collaboratively with hospitalists, nursing, rehabilitation, pharmacy, case management, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.

8. Develop individualized treatment plans based on each patient's clinical condition, goals, and needs.

9. Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and goals of care.

10. Participate in family meetings and support patients and families during difficult medical decisions.

11. Coordinate transitions of care and collaborate with referring hospitals, specialists, and post-acute providers.

12. Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical initiatives.

13. Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation in the electronic medical record.

14. Provide care consistent with RML Specialty Hospital's mission, values, policies, and standards of clinical excellence.

Knowledge, Practical Experience and Licensure/Registration Required:

• MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an Internal Medicine residency
• Completion of an accredited Pulmonary or Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pulmonary Medicine and/or Critical Care Medicine, as applicable
• Illinois medical license
• Eligible for hospital privileges at RML Specialty Hospital
• Excellent clinical judgment and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care
