Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Outpatient Oncology Dietitian, RDIII – Holistic Oncology Clinic.

This position will primarily focus on caring for patients with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors, including gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, neuroendocrine, brain and skin cancers, as well as bone and soft tissue sarcomas. The role will also support patients with sickle cell disease.

The Oncology Dietitian’s role is to assess, monitor and document the nutritional status and nutrition needs of patients using evidence-based standards of care, clinical practice guidelines and department policies. The RD will perform duties in support of, and in compliance with, performance improvement plans and the requirements of regulatory, accrediting and licensing agencies.

The RD will perform nutrition-focused physical exams, write enteral nutrition support prescriptions and educate patients, caregivers, students and the interdisciplinary team about therapeutic diets, estimated nutrition needs and/or nutrition support regimens to improve or maintain patients’ nutritional status and promote optimal outcomes. The RD will provide nutrition counseling and guidance from diagnosis through survivorship to support patients’ individual nutrition needs and treatment goals.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs the nutrition care process (nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis and determination of care goals, nutrition intervention, and monitoring and evaluation) for patients at nutrition risk and others identified per department standards as in need of nutrition care
  • Provide age-specific patient education (assessment of learning needs and barriers to learning; communication with patient/caregivers and assessing learning transfer) and develop materials as needed to augment the education process.
  • Complete nutrition focused physical exams to assess malnutrition status.
  • Calculates nutrient requirements and intake.
  • Assesses need for and determine appropriate composition, rate, etc. of enteral tube feeding, if applicable
  • Uses computer programs to access information and communicate with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Documents clinical care according to organizational guidelines
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • MS degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or other relevant major
  • Specialty certification related to area of clinical practice, such as Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO) or Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC)
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration with successful completion of coordinated program, dietetic internship, or other experience approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education
  • Maintenance of RD status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) by accrual of 75 units of approved Continuing Professional Education every 5 years.
  • Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) by both the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency
  • Minimum of 6(+) year’s total clinical experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to work with patients and staff from diverse cultural, educational, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Computer literacy (minimum Outlook, Word, Excel, Epic)

The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
