Position Summary: Diagnosis, treatment, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of surgical problems in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in an in-patient and outpatient setting.

Responsible for the surgical repair of birth defects, surgical techniques specific to each stage of child development, and the treatment of traumas in children. Provides leadership participation of the pediatric cardiology clinic.

Pediatric cardiologist treats diseases and abnormalities of the heart and circulatory system in children. The pediatric cardiologists will work with children, from newborns to teenagers, in order to diagnose, treat, and prevent heart and/or cardiovascular issues, including congenital conditions and defects.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities: Evaluate and treat problems with growth and development and diagnosing health issues for surgery. Estimates possible risk to patient and determines treatment or procedure. Reviews reports of patient’s general physical condition, reactions, to medications, and medical history.

Examines instruments, equipment, and surgical setup to ensure that antiseptic and aseptic methods have been followed. Obtains and evaluates the medical health and developmental history of the patient and family.

Performs physical exams, orders and schedules laboratory and diagnostic studies, and conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Requests, interprets and performs necessary laboratory, radiographic and diagnostic studies for incorporations into the patient’s plan of care and progress evaluation.

Develops and implements an initial plan for differential diagnoses and management of presenting problems with the collaborating physician. Prescribes and administers medications.

Coordinates the medical plan of care with consulting physicians, residents, nursing staff and other healthcare providers to ensure consistency and to facilitate continuity of care. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

License/Registration/Certification Current Board Certification or Board Eligibility in the specialty of planned clinical activity. Current specialty specific cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Qualifications

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pediatric Cardiology. Completion of an ACGME-accredited Pediatrics Residency and Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship. Eligible for Texas medical licensure. Experience teaching medical students and residents preferred. Additional training in cardiac imaging preferred. Education and Training Completion of a four-year M.D./D.O. degree program and medical residency. M.D./D.O. degree or foreign medical equivalent degree

• Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited Pediatrics Residency Program Successful completion of an ACGME- accredited Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program Eligible to obtain a Texas State Medical License Board Certified in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics or eligible to sit for examination in Pediatric Cardiology Experience in teaching students and residents in Pediatric Cardiology Additional training in Cardiac imaging Skills: Effective assessment, evaluation and resolution skills. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to remain flexible and positive in stressful situations. Ability to read and comprehend English at a level necessary to follow written and oral instructions and safety precautions. Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish).
