Occupational Therapist II EX

The Staff Therapist, Occupational Therapist II, reports to the Clinical
Supervisor, Occupational Therapy and provides both direct and indirect patient
care services.  The Therapist works primarily with adult and geriatric patients
from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and
adolescent patients may also be treated. The Therapist demonstrates a solid
knowledge base within a wide range of diagnoses including general medicine,
orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary in the adult and/or pediatric
setting. Under general supervision and within a specific therapy discipline, the
Therapist independently performs complex patient evaluations and therapeutic
interventions; serves as a mentor to staff and consultant to other medical
professionals in patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning or
intervention requiring discipline specific skills. The Therapist makes
recommendations in patient care procedures, protocols or programs related to the
discipline specific areas, and instructs therapists and other medical
professionals in the theory, application and/or performance of discipline
specific skills.  While performing job duties, the Therapist may also lead
support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts
including Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides as
well as O. T. and C. O. T. A. students.  The Therapist actively participates in
departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement
activities, clinical education programs, and inservices and staff development
activities.

I.  Patient Care

RESPONSIBILITIES

A.         Performs occupational therapy evaluations on referral by a licensed
physician or dentist and administers various orthopedic, neurological,
cognitive, visual assessment, visual-perceptual-motor, psychosocial, ADL, and
developmental tests to determine a patient’s functional and psychosocial
limitations.

B.         Establishes short and long term therapeutic intervention goals based
on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring
practitioner.

C.         Develops a therapeutic intervention plan based on results of the
evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic
intervention programs according to the patient's progress and performance.

D.        Administers direct patient care, utilizing the full range of
occupational therapy techniques as outlined in the Series Concept.

E.         Delegates and supervises any part of a patient's therapeutic
intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.

F.         Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.

G.        Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as
required including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third
party payer reports (e. g. CCS, Medicare, Medi-Cal forms).

H.         Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families,
department staff, managers and other hospital personnel.

I.          Reports on patients' progress at various rounds, clinics and case
conferences as indicated.

J.         Demonstrates effective time management skills.

II. Educational

E.         Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education at a minimum of
40 hours of coursework annually. This can be demonstrated by attendance at
continuing education courses, Grand Rounds, independent reading, professional
activities, campus lectures and mentoring.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

* Minimum of 1 year of general patient care experience with a minimum of 1 year
in a relevant multi-disciplinary setting, within the past 5 years.

* Minimum of 40 hours of professional development activities, 50% of which are
continuing education credits (CEUs) or relevant academic coursework. The
remainder can include mentoring, Grand Rounds, independent reading, etc.

* Prior experience as a clinical preceptor and prior experience teaching to a
wide variety of audiences.

* Demonstrates ability to consistently meet clinical caseload requirements of a
staff level therapist.

* Ability to work a minimum of 32 hours and 4 days per week.

* Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

* Ability to recognize signs of distress.

* Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.

* Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.

* Proven ability to mentor professional behaviors including interpersonal, time
management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.

* This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical
Center locations.

Preferred

* Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center
environment.

* Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.

* Ability to work full time, 5 days per week.

* Possession of a graduate degree or certificate in Occupational Therapy from
an accredited professional educational program.

* 5 years of experience in a relevant specialty area across the rehabilitation
continuum of care: acute care, acute rehab/SNF, outpatient services.

Required Licenses/ Certifications

* Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as an Occupational
Therapist by the Occupational Therapy Board of California.
