BH Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses who specialize in psychiatry and perform similar duties as a psychiatric physician. Psychiatric nurse practitioners speak to patients about their feelings and then diagnose the patient’s mental health based on their conversation.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners are licensed and able to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medications. The duties of a psychiatric nurse practitioner include treating patients with anxiety disorders, feelings of depression, multiple personality disorder and suicidal thoughts to name a few.

Duties/Responsibilities

Experience assessing and providing medical services to patients with behavioral health disorders in a psychiatric or primary care setting.

• Experience with adults, adolescents, and children.
• Working knowledge and experience assessing and treating adults/adolescents with alcohol and other drug abuse/dependence.
• Expert clinical judgment and the ability to be self-directed and demonstrate initiative in an expanded role.
• Possess outstanding conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, as well as critical thinking ability.
• Effective oral and written communication skills to relate with staff, patients, and community providers.
• Teach patients family members about the patient’s mental illness, including what to expect, how to react and how to cope with their feelings.
• Diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medications.
• Participate in quarterly providers meeting.
• Collaborate and work under the supervision of the Director of Behavioral Health and the psychiatrist.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• State Board of Nursing certified
• National Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing Specialty
• Registered with the State of CA and DEA for prescription writing privileges
• Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited nurse practitioner training program
• Basic Life Support -AHA
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Requires a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral health in outpatient settings.

• Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities.
• Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to safe work practices.
• Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions.
• Ability to work with a diverse population.
• Willing to work flexible hours, including evening and/or weekends.
• Must have reliable transportation and valid CA driver-s license and an insurable DMV record.
• Must be self-directed and work productively with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
• Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook
• Knowledge of Electronic Health Records

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Pushing and pulling objects up to 25 lbs.
• Frequent wrist, hand, and finger dexterity to perform fine motor function.

Position requires light to moderate work with 25 lb. maximum weight to lift and carry.

Full range of body motion requires twisting body, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, listening, talking, and/or hearing, and seeing.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday; 9am – 6pm. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
