The Hartford HealthCare Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) has an opportunity for an intensivist with a strong cardiac interest and experience to join a team of collegial and highly trained Cardiac ICU staff at Hartford Hospital.

  • Care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease which can include pre- and postoperative care, heart transplant and/or a Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD), and acute mechanical circulatory support (ECMO cannulation, impella and intra-aortic balloon pumps) and cardiogenic shock
  • Opportunities for involvement in our ECMO program
  • Leadership opportunities within our ECMO program with appropriate level of experience
  • Cannulation experience preferred but not required
  • Educational opportunities with APPs, cardiology fellows, critical care fellows, residents and interns
  • Successful candidate will be able to place chest tubes, and perform bronchoscopy and emergent intubations
  • The Hartford Hospital critical care unit is staffed with highly trained advanced practitioners and fellows
  • The Heart and Vascular Institute is one of the strongest programs in the country. The Cardiac Surgery service performs approximately 1500 surgeries per year. The Advanced Heart Failure Service is one of the largest in New England, with one of the highest post-transplant survival rates in the nation. HHC HVI performs on average 40 transplants a year.

This is a salaried position. While compensation is presented as an hourly rate for consistency across our postings, this position is paid on a salary basis. The hiring range reflects a good faith estimate of pay for this position as of the posting date. Actual pay will be determined based on qualifications, location, internal equity, and other factors that may include hire bonuses, incentive pay plans, loan repayment, administrative stipends, or relocation.

Key Responsibilities

The intensivist will provide comprehensive care for patients with complex cardiovascular diseases, including those requiring heart transplants, VADs, and mechanical circulatory support. Additionally, the role involves leadership within the ECMO program and the education of fellows, residents, and advanced practitioners.

Licensure & Certifications

The successful candidate must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Critical Care Medicine. Experience with cardiac critical care and mechanical circulatory support is required, with cannulation experience preferred.
