Locum NP (Nurse Practitioner), PA (Physician's Assistant) Cardiothoracic Surgery

This is a contract, on-site position offering a unique opportunity to provide essential patient care within a dynamic Medical Practice environment.

In this role, you will be an integral part of a specialized surgical team, contributing directly to patient outcomes before, during, and after cardiothoracic procedures. You will collaborate closely with surgeons, physicians, and nursing staff to ensure comprehensive and continuous care for patients undergoing complex cardiac and thoracic surgeries. The position requires a committed professional ready to step into a fast-paced clinical setting and make an immediate impact.

Responsibilities

• Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room during complex surgical procedures.
• Perform pre-operative patient assessments, including history taking and physical examinations.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as EKGs, chest X-rays, and lab work.
• Provide post-operative care, including managing drains, monitoring vital signs, and adjusting treatment plans.
• Conduct daily patient rounds in the ICU and on the surgical floor.
• Document patient care accurately and comprehensively in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement patient care plans.
• Educate patients and their families on surgical procedures, recovery processes, and health management.
• Participate in on-call rotations and handle urgent clinical issues as they arise.
• Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, protocols, and safety standards.

Requirements

Current and unrestricted licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the state of Massachusetts.

Board Certification as an NP (e. g., ACNP, AGACNP) or PA-C.

• Associate level experience in a cardiothoracic surgery setting.
• Proven experience in first-assisting in cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures.
• Ability to perform advanced clinical assessments and manage complex post-operative care.
• Proficiency in interpreting diagnostic tests relevant to cardiothoracic patients.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration and patient interaction.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in high-pressure situations.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, on-site clinical environment.
• Must hold a valid DEA license and be able to obtain hospital privileges in Worcester.

Schedule: 12, 13, or 24-hour shifts

Daily Census: 3-6 patients + consults

16-bed ICU

APP is only responsible for surgical aspects of ICU

Skills Needed: ECMO, ventricular support, central and arterial lines, catheter insertion/removal

EMR: Epic

Must be board-certified

Paid travel & expenses
