Job Description Summary

The Attending Physician will join the Cancer Rehabilitation Program at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and contribute to its continued growth. The role provides comprehensive rehabilitation care for individuals with cancer across diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and advanced disease. The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical interest in cancer rehabilitation and in developing innovative models of care for this population.

Completion of a Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship is preferred but not required. Candidates with substantial clinical experience or a demonstrated interest in cancer rehabilitation, oncology rehabilitation, or the rehabilitation of medically complex patients are also encouraged to apply.

Job Description

Clinical, Programmatic, and Academic Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities expected of all Attending Physicians, the successful candidate may assume the following responsibilities:

Clinical Care and Collaboration

Provide specialized rehabilitation care for individuals with cancer in inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, and acute-care consultation settings, based on clinical need and program development.

Evaluate and manage functional impairments and rehabilitation needs associated with cancer and its treatments, including surgery, systemic therapy, radiation therapy, transplantation, and emerging treatments.

Collaborate with oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, palliative care, therapy, nursing, and other interdisciplinary teams to integrate rehabilitation throughout the cancer care continuum.

Improve access to rehabilitation by developing clinical pathways that support earlier identification and referral of patients with rehabilitation needs.

Program Development, Quality, and Growth

Support the continued development and expansion of Cancer Rehabilitation services across Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and with affiliated oncology programs and health-system partners.

Develop, implement, and evaluate innovative clinical programs and models of care, including cancer prehabilitation, rehabilitation during active treatment, survivorship care, management of treatment-related functional impairments, and rehabilitation for individuals with advanced cancer.

Develop and evaluate patient-centered clinical and functional outcomes to measure the effectiveness and impact of Cancer Rehabilitation services.

Partner with clinical and administrative leaders to establish and assess quality, operational, access, utilization, and financial measures for the Cancer Rehabilitation Program and broader institutional performance initiatives.

Use outcomes, quality measures, operational data, and financial metrics to identify improvement opportunities, demonstrate program value, and guide strategic growth and sustainability.

Research, Scholarship, and Education

Collaborate with investigators, research teams, clinical leaders, and institutional partners to advance research that addresses important questions in cancer rehabilitation and translates emerging evidence into practice.

Foster a collaborative clinical and research environment that supports innovation, prospective outcomes assessment, clinical research, quality improvement, and dissemination of new models of care.

Participate in scholarly activities, including clinical research, quality improvement, presentations of program outcomes, publications, and other efforts to advance Cancer Rehabilitation nationally and internationally.

Educate Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents, fellows, medical students, therapists, and other healthcare professionals in the principles and practice of Cancer Rehabilitation.

Help develop curricula, conferences, and other internal and external educational initiatives related to Cancer Rehabilitation.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Program Medical Director or the Chief Medical Officer as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation and is Board certified or Board Eligible.
  • Faculty appointment at Northwestern University Medical School.
  • Current CPR or BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

Excellent communications and interdisciplinary skills required, including proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, referring parties, SRAlab and other internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Interest or experience in Cancer Rehabilitation, oncology rehabilitation, or the rehabilitation of medically complex patients.

Completion of a Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship or comparable advanced training; preferred but not required.

Experience or interest in clinical program development, outcomes assessment, quality improvement, and innovative models of care.

Strong interdisciplinary and collaborative skills, including an interest in building relationships with oncology providers and programs across affiliated healthcare systems.

Interest in partnering with research teams and institutional leaders to develop and evaluate innovative approaches to Cancer Rehabilitation and strengthen the evidence base.

Commitment to education, scholarship, quality improvement, and the continued growth of Cancer Rehabilitation as a clinical and academic discipline.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

Pay and Benefits*

Pay Range: $250,000.00 annually - $350,000.00 annually
