General Dentist

The General Dentist will provide comprehensive dental care through the College’s faculty practice and/or direct supervision of student-delivered care, with a commitment to serving vulnerable and underserved populations consistent with the College’s mission.

The position will participate in interprofessional education and collaboration with UPIKE health professions programs and contribute to integrated care models that promote best practices in interdisciplinary health professions education.
The General Dentist will also participate in departmental committees, curriculum review, student assessment, and institutional initiatives, including CODA accreditation preparation, continuous quality improvement, and strategic planning. The position will contribute to community outreach efforts that address oral health disparities and improve access to care in rural Appalachian communities.

The General Dentist will engage in scholarship or community-based inquiry related to general dentistry, oral health disparities, or dental education, while pursuing ongoing professional development and continuing education to remain current in advances in clinical practice and dental education.

Responsibilities

Supervise predoctoral dental students in the diagnosis, comprehensive treatment planning, and delivery of restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, and oral surgical procedures within clinical settings. Model exemplary patient-centered care and ethical and professional conduct in compliance with established standards. Integrate digital dentistry tools and contemporary clinical technologies into student supervision and instruction. Create learning materials, facilitate seminars, and lead small-group discussions in general dentistry and related biomedical and clinical sciences. Develop and refine curriculum content in alignment with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards and the College’s curricular goals. Incorporate evidence-based practice and interprofessional perspectives into all instructional activities. Serve as a mentor and professional role model, providing constructive, timely feedback on student performance and clinical competency. Provide comprehensive dental care to patients within the College’s faculty practice or through direct supervision of student-delivered care. Demonstrate a commitment to serving vulnerable and underserved patient populations consistent with the College’s mission. Actively participate in interprofessional education initiatives in collaboration with UPIKE’s programs in medicine, optometry, nursing, and social work. Contribute to the development of integrated care models that reflect best practices in interdisciplinary health professions education. Engage in CODA accreditation preparation, continuous quality improvement efforts, and institutional strategic planning. Contribute to community outreach initiatives addressing oral health disparities in rural Appalachian communities. Pursue and maintain continuing education to remain current with advances in clinical practice and dental pedagogy.

Requirements

DMD or DDS degree from a CODA-accredited institution or equivalent. Possess or be eligible to obtain a license to practice dentistry in Kentucky or faculty-limited licensure. Graduate of a CODA-accredited GPR/AEGD program is preferred. Previous experience supervising predoctoral dental education students at CODA-accredited institutions and/or familiarity with community dentistry, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), or rural health practice environments is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
