Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Inc. (SVCHS) is seeking a PRN Staffing Pharmacist to provide as-needed staffing support for the entity-owned retail pharmacy at our Tazewell Community Health Center (Tazewell, VA). This role combines accurate prescription dispensing, patient counseling, medication therapy management, and collaboration with clinical teams to support safe, affordable, patient-centered care.

The ideal candidate brings strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and a helpful, professional approach to serving patients. Candidates must be able to provide flexible coverage, including assignments on short notice.

Key Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations and Medication Safety

  • Provide pharmacist coverage and pharmacy services at SVCHS-owned retail pharmacy locations as assigned.
  • Review and dispense prescriptions accurately, applying clinical judgment to support safe and appropriate medication use.
  • Supervise pharmacy employees during assigned shifts and maintain safe, efficient dispensing workflows.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized pharmacy environment.
  • Maintain accurate pharmacy files, dispensing records, and other required documentation.
  • Oversee controlled substance ordering, dispensing, and recordkeeping.
  • Monitor cash management and oversee prescription billing.
  • Maintain knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program and support appropriate pharmacy operations and billing practices.

Patient Care and Clinical Collaboration

  • Provide patient counseling on medication use and deliver respectful, responsive customer service.
  • Identify medication-related problems and coordinate their resolution with prescribers and other care team members.
  • Conduct Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and medication monitoring for SVCHS pharmacy patients.
  • Serve as a drug information resource for patients, pharmacy colleagues, and SVCHS clinical staff.

Communicate professionally with clinical teams using electronic health records and pharmacy dispensing systems.

Use cost-effective medication strategies and available programs to improve medication affordability and promote adherence.

Support prescription delivery to SVCHS medical sites, local home delivery, or prescription mailing services as assigned.

Teamwork and Professional Accountability

  • Build positive working relationships with pharmacy staff, clinical teams, patients, and families.
  • Follow SVCHS policies and procedures and support the organization’s mission and values.
  • Maintain required licensure and credentials and complete mandatory training.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accuracy, and accountability in all work and communications.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Current, valid Virginia pharmacist license, maintained throughout employment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal laws governing pharmacy practice.
  • Strong knowledge of drug therapy, prescription dispensing, and medication safety.
  • Ability to work an as-needed schedule and provide coverage on short notice.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree and possess a current, valid Virginia pharmacist license. Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws, drug therapy, and the ability to work on short notice are required.
